Why isn't F.C. Cincinnati a MLS team?

With the atmosphere and the crowds they produce , you'd think they would be a good bid. I'd also enjoy the rivalry week game between them and Columbus Crew.

because they didn't pay the $200 million ransom to SUM and the USSF to be recognized as division 1

That's a shame

There's lots of places around the country that could same the same thing. The answer is...money. Ohio's markets are already covered by the Crew.
MLS expansion is on the table. If they add enough to the league, they would be added. At least now the process is open. Either the team/owners have the plan that is attractive, or they don't.

Atmosphere seemed pretty good through the TV. That place went crazy on that last PK save.

Um there are a few states and cities that have multiple clubs

MLS expansion is coming to an end bc the league will be too big. There is no open process to joining MLS. MLS is a closed league in a closed system run by USSF.

I think they get in. I also don't think MLS has any intention to slow down membership. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they extend to 30+ clubs. For better or worse.
I think cincinnati gets in this next round of four.
23. LA FC
24. Miami FC (tentative)
25.
26.
27.
28.
29.
30.

30 teams is way too big and would essentially kill any depth the league has.
But if it came to that the league needs to go to 36 clubs and have MLS I and MLS II. But no owner is paying $200+ million for a second division team.

I completely agree. I think 28 teams is too big. But I also think Don Garber sees things differently.
Another idea I have heard thrown around is the idea of pro/rel in a unified USL-NASL-PDL-NPSL structure. Would be separate from MLS. But would make those leagues somewhat interesting.

Sounds like MLS is looking to go only up to 28 right now....but that could no doubt change. As is stands now, looks like the following 12 cities are vying for those last 4 spots (assuming Miami finally gets its shite together):
Sacramento | St. Louis | Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg | Nashville | San Antonio | Raleigh
Cincinnati | Charlotte | Indianapolis | Phoenix | San Diego | Detroit
Based on this list and what Cincinnati have shown with respect to fan support, I think they have a good chance. I don't know anything regarding a stadium for the club, however.

I agree. I just hope it's competitive and fun to watch at the end of the day.

Sacramento - Too much drama with club name, etc. I think they would be ideal for MLS, but I think Don wants San Diego, especially with Landon Donovan helping out. No way the state of California gets 5 clubs.
St Louis - The stadium deal did not get votes. St Louis to MLS is dead. There have been rumors of a renewed effort, but I don't see it happening.
TB/St Pete - They have the funding, but if David Beckham FC does in fact happen, then it is the death knell for TB. However, of the Beckham deal falls through I think TB has a great shot of taking their spot.
Nashville - Has the funding. State and county are willing to play ball on the stadium. Is seen as an "it" city. The problem is we don't even have the USL club up and running. We have no ide what that would look like. We don't even have a stadium plan in place. We *think* we know where we want to put it, but until the stadium plans come out we just don't know.
San Antonio - Yes, it's a big soccer city but it's not happening.
Raleigh - Not happening.
Cincinnati - it's going to happen. I think they will be 25. They essentially take St Louis's spot.
Charlotte - Dead
Indianapolis - On life support
Phoenix - We'll see if they can get a climate controlled stadium plan happening. But I still see them as a long shot, even though they seem to be on the rise.
San Diego - Appears to be a match made in heaven. I don't think they will be fast enough to be 25 or 26. If Sacramento isn't announced for 25 or 26, then SD is pretty much assured at 27 or 28.
Detroit - The wild card. Garber is in love with Gilbert and Gores. But they are having stadium issues as well, even though they are doing all they can to buy out the land that currently has a half built jail. The whole story is weird. Couple all this with the fact that the fans of the current club, Detroit City FC (NPSL) are very united, and very anti-MLS. The whole situation is very bizarre.
What I want:
Miami or TB/St Pete. I don't care which. Whichever one makes it will become Orlando's rival.
Nashville and Cincinnati in the same expansion. You get the Columbus-Cincinnati rivalry, and Nashville-Atlanta rivalry.
The last two: San Diego + don't care.

I am so giddy for Cincy to get a MLS team, but they need a stadium. Popular opinion is they'll build it across the river in Newport, KY. Not sure where they would put it in the city.
ETA: Maybe newly redeveloped Over-The-Rhine.

yea that plastic pitch is brutal
honestly MLS should require all clubs to have a grass pitch.

I think MLS will go to 36 or 40, then implement PR between 2 divisions only.

That's what we all want
But no one is going to fork over $200+ million to dick around in the second division. If they waived the franchise fee to fill MLS II all those owners who paid would be pissed. Not to mention something like parachute payments for lost revenue once being send down.
But yea this causes the problem of nothing negative happing to a club who just mails it in, tanks or never makes any real steps to improve its squad.

I couldn't agree anymore with this. It sucks because a two-tier MLS system could become very exciting for the fans.

Not with a salary cap at least. If I could buy a team and spend what I want, knowing we'd buttfrick the 2nd division and be promoted, ok.
