Has Honduras made the quarterfinals, or even won a game at the World Cup? No.
Then it's not meaningless if we're comparing the two teams, even if it's from 80 years ago. Honduras is definitely a top 3 Central American team, but they're WAY behind us and Mexico. Teams like Canada and Jamaiaca will hopefully displace those clowns from the Hex so we don't have to play them as much anymore.

So you're telling me that, because Cuba made the quarterfinals in a Hitler-affected World Cup in 1938, they are comparable to Honduras?

To make the quarterfinals, Cuba only had to beat Romania. Romania qualified for the WC because Egypt refused to play during Ramadan. FIFA disqualified Egypt, and Romania automatically qualified.

They are still way above Cuba.

By this fool's logic, Hungary is a bigger soccer power in Europe than Portugal.
Hungary made the final match in 1938 & 1954. Lowly Portugal has never made it that far.

You disagreed with me, in that you think there is a huge gap between Honduras and the teams like Belize and Cuba, and I don't think the gap is that big relative to our region. We might disagree, and that's fine, whatever.
Honduras is definitely better than those teams, but not by a hell of a lot. They have a team full of decent MLS players and domestic players, but nothing too formidable. They struggled against some pretty weak teams in the Gold Cup.
If you grouped CONCACAF into tiers based on say the last 8 years, there'd be the top 3, a big gap, then teams like Honduras, Panama, T&T, Jamaica, then a small gap with the other teams that make the Gold Cup every few times (which would include teams like Haiti, Belize, and Cuba). Teams from Tier 3 are more likely to beat Tier 2 teams than Tier 2 teams beating the top 3. I'm not denying Belize and Cuba are a mess, just saying Honduras isn't that much better. I see them falling off for a while, and Canada will eventually be a lock for the Hex.

Like us, Canada has only recently taken soccer seriously. They're probably 20 years behind us in terms of soccer and they have a much lower soccer pool to choose from. But in terms of infrastructure, they are behind only us and arguably Mexico.
I think they are still a ways off from being a top 6 team, but once they finally reach that level, I think they hold onto it permanently. The will have stability, unlike some other teams in the region.
I don't think Jamaica will ever be more than a good Tier 2 team in this region, but they can still displace Honduras every other cycle, perhaps. They need to play like they did this Gold Cup more consistently.

In 2010, no. Honduras was indeed better then, and proved as much.
Since then, Costa Rica has had a golden generation of players take them to a World Cup quarterfinal. Honduras hasn't really changed much. Costa Rica will fall back to Tier 2 status soon, and it will be just us and Mexico on top of CONCACAF again soon.
I don't think Costa Rica's recent success is sustainable for a nation that size. Normally they would be a fringe top 6 team, about where Honduras and Panama are. Their current crop of players is aging, and they don't have a huge pool to replace that talent like we and Mexico do.
Eventually Canada will enter the top tier with us and Mexico, but that might take 30 years. We'll see.

How would we all feel about Timmy Chandler's national team career ending, if that is the case?
I wouldn't care too much. He clearly has talent, but never seemed to play as well for us as he does in the Bundesliga. Hard to tell if he just didn't care, but it sure looked like it sometimes.

Well, unfortunately Yedlin won't be available for us these two games. Nothing can change that.
If we have to choose between Zusi and Chandler, Zusi has been the better US player, even though Chandler is more talented. Timmy hasn't exactly performed well for us in the past. Zusi, for all his faults, did an OK job against the Ticos last time out.
