Assuming Spain is out after the match today, what in the world is their motivation to play the third match and doesn't that third team get a huge advantage because Spain could come out unmotivated?

I know it's risky to ask questions here. I did try Google.

Aussies would be out as well with a Chilean win.

There is no motivation other than it still being the World Cup. The team they'll be playing (Australia) will be eliminated as well.

They still play. Mainly for pride and for younger players to impress and for older players to go out on a high.

It's not when you ask intelligent questions.

They should play for national pride (which no one from Spain seems to have at the moment). Some are probably playing to make a name for themselves (especially on the Aussie's) to get a new contract elsewhere.

OK. Thanks for the answers. Sounds like it wouldn't be a match to mark down to watch for the future.

So, if Spain had to play against another team that needed the win next, then it would just be the good fortune of that team to play a defeated and deflated power?

Good thing is that the Chile vs Netherlands game will be going on at the same time. Those teams will be fighting to finish first in their group.

First plays second from another grouping next I take it? That would make sense from my baseball mind.

In theory, yes, although sometimes the team that is already eliminated plays very loose while the other team that needs a result is wound tight.

This happened in 2002, when the USA (who needed a tie or a win) lost to Poland (who was already eliminated).

Thankfully, we still advanced because South Korea beat Portugal.

Bingo

First in Group A plays second in Group B and vice versa. And then first in C plays second in D etc.

Teams from the same group cannot play each other again until the final.

People don't get mad for asking questions. They get mad when saying stupid stuff like, "How many world cups would we win if we had the Miami Heat playing?"

A question is a question, but a stupid chest pumping statement made into a question is stupid. If that makes sense.

That or they just play with no pressure since there is nothing left to lose.
