Watering down the field before and at halftime of the match?

After warmup a they turned the sprinklers on and watered down the field. Why was this done? It had been raining a couple hours before kickoff already.

Softens the field (the players this week were saying it was pretty hard), makes the ball move faster, maybe cools the temperature at field level.

go to any top level match in europe and they water the grass, even though it rains a frick ton in europe.
