Watched todays game with a Derby County fan

It was a bit fun watching the game with an Englishman that's a fan of a smaller club. I asked his thoughts about the upcoming World Cup and like a true England fan he picked the 3 lions as the winners.

Maybe it's just me coming from a country that hasn't had a lot of success on the international stage but the delusional they have amazes me.

There's always a lot of posters here claiming it's only the media that paints this picture.
However, while there are certainly tons of objective English fans, from my experience they do have a larger, more vocal percentage of fans that really do think the English team should be winning Euros and World Cups with regularity. It's the same ones who obviously never watch a match that's not English between those events though.
Compared to the extreme pessimism of most Italians it always strikes me as funny. On a couple of AS Roma Italian forums I follow, polls were about 60% that Italy wouldn't make it out of group C. Only about 50% picked Italy to beat Ireland.

That's unusual. Most Englishmen are very pessimistic about the national team. The best you're going to get out of them is guarded optimism. I guess you have to cut him slack because he's a Derby fan. You should have sung him a little tune such as..."You're mum's your dad, you're dad's your mum, you're interbred you're Derby scum."
