The announcers then corrected their mistake and said the AR was signaling a goal kick. At that level Of play, with how close that was to being offside, I guarantee the center ref glanced quickly to see if his AR's flag went up, and if it did he would have blown the whistle quickly. Once JJ Flickr that ball on, I guarantee his eyes went straight to the AR. He's not going to hesitate to blow his whistle on that stage.

Actually he would if he wasn't 100% certain what the AR was signaling. Inadvertently whistling for offsides before the shot would be MUCH worse than a delayed whistle.

There is clearly some gray area in the decision and what the intent of the ref was.

Dempsey and Wondo said they thought the offside flag was up. The match stats don't have any offside, but those are unofficial and not validated after the fact by the officials.

Unless the linesman confirms there's no way to 100% what happened, IMO. Clearly not everyone is convinced he was merely signaling for goal kick...

He was way onside, regardless.

Wondo wasn't even close to offside but several players have said the flag went up. Just because he didn't award the free kick in that situation doesn't mean the flag didn't go up.

The AR isn't going to signal a goal kick before the ball is hit.

No shite. But if he signaled offside and thought the ref had already confirmed it he would drop his flag to signal the placement, which would look exactly like a goal kick signal. I'm saying if the AR dropped his flag too quickly and the ref wasn't certain of what call he made he would abolutely hesitate and confer with him to get the call right rather than whistling for the offside.

Then the only reason for him to put his flag up was to call offside.

Was the flag up for Yedlin? Sure as shite couldn't be for Wondo.

Regardless, a 19-year-old had more composure than a 32-year-old on the biggest stage of their profession. Congrats and live with that, Wondo.

Yeh, I'm an a-hole for all you antithesis

The ref would confirm it by blowing his whistle. The AR would hold his flag up until the whistle is blown.

ETA.. I saw you say in another thread that you played in Dallas Cup a couple times. What club/year were you?

The AR could have seen that the result would have been a goalkick and changed his signal.

That's not his decision to make, that's on the head ref.

If he wanted to signal that the keeper didn't touch it, he could change it. It would have resulted in the same thing.

The Gaurdian's live gamecast said the offside flag was raised also.

Here is my theory,in the write up of the stats, FIFA knowing that the sideline ref cheated, called it a goal kick, when the ref signals the goal kick, not the linesman, so as to squelch the out cry of having an Algerian crew working our game.

The POS lineman was going to cheat us, but Wondo missed, so FIFA came up with a cock-n-bull story.

Wondo should have passed to Dempsey for a wide open goal.

The side judge doesn't call thw gpal kicks, the ref does.

Realizing how ESPN likes controversy FIFA decided to put down zero offsides.

The linsenan called offsides.

And no Algerian should have been allowed to rdf this game.

Saying that, the ref dud a good job, but FIFA is tone deaf.

Wow, an offsides call there would have been epically bad, considering the Belgian defender is OBVIOUSLY well within the lighter grass while both Dempsey and Wondo were on the edge. There was also no offsides before the header was hit.

You are right, though, of that goal had been disallowed, all hell would have broken loose on such an epically bad call.

Actually the "side judge" does signal goal kicks, by pointing his flag towards the 6 yard box.
