I was wanting to put this down before we played Mexico so it didn’t seem like a “hot take”. I’ve been watching the national team for close to 30 years and we’ve never had such a talented group coming through. We are very young and it will take a while to get up to speed but the talent is there. I’ll put coaching aside for this thread as I definitely think Gregg is not the answer as his tactical acumen is lacking imo. Onto my point........for this new, talented generation to hit the heights we’ve never seen before (past the quarterfinals; 1950 was a semifinal but contested by few nations) they have to have the desire and passion that previous (2002 in particular) USMNT had. Yes, the U.S sucked too with that same grit when we had the clueless Steve Sampson leading us but let’s please forget that asshat for this discussion.

Players like McBride, Heyduk, Joe-Max Moore, Stewart and Cobi Jones were not the most skillful players but those frickers would run through a brick wall for the U.S badge. It was imo an attitude to show the world that American players could succeed. Will these players have the passion those players had since the view has somewhat changed the way people view the USMNT. That passion and desire mixed with an organized as frick system carried us to the quarters and if not for a Frings handball on the line, that desire mixed with some skillful players (O’Brien, Reyna, Donovan) would have taken us to the semis.

Getting a better gaffer in the future will help but it will be interesting to see if the players show the same passion previous editions had to bring us further then we’ve ever seen in the modern game.

I think this new generation has a passion the last one lacked. spare me all you want about Bradley this, Jozy that etc etc.

it might just be ignorant youth, but seeing the looks on the faces of Siebatchu, Dike(while not even in the squad), and a whole host of others when that goal went in last night told me a lot

this competition means nothing in the grand scheme, and they at least pretended it meant something to them

They have pride, guts, and supreme confidence. That is 100% American.

Tyler Adam’s getting carded from the bench, Brooks putting down the Honduran fracas with silent intimidation, Pulisic having that cocky interaction with the ref when walking off the pitch because the ref was pure arse…

This team has a fire. We need a couple more vocal guys out there, but the baseline is there to kick off one helluva run into the future.

I know you said ignore Greg, but one thing on him: I think if he can get his camp and roster call ups right and consistent, this team will enter warp-speed in their development and execution of the system.

They definitely had pride... people act like they weren't key pieces of the 2010 WCQ cycle which was probably the most "we fight because we are America" USMNT cycle ever.

They just also happened to be the vets on in the 2018 cycle where Jurgen supremely fricked up the USMNT team culture and Bruce wasn't able to get things back on track.

I think Bradley and Jozy get scapegoated a little too much, when Jurgen was the main reason shite got fricked.

It's a shame Jozy's form has nosedived as bad as it has, because this team needs an in-their-prime vet to be the advice guy for this younger generation. Right now on the current squad, if any new player wants to ask about World Cup qualifiers, the only guys that can answer that are Pulisic, Yedlin, Brooks and Acosta... all of which have only experienced supreme failure in that area.

John O’Brien was so fricking good during his Ajax, pre-injury days.

A young Donovan and Beasley were also awesome to watch in 2002 and Friedel was stellar in goal. (Except when Agoos went upper 90 on him!)

Kind of building off of that and some other points, there’s a core group of 15-20 guys who are constantly commenting on each other’s social media and hanging out outside of camps. They are all around the same age, and mostly living in Europe. Think their bonds with each other will help them tremendously since there’s no real older vocal leader (maybe Brooks but not sure how vocal he is).

This is the first time I've been kinda excited about the potential of U.S. soccer in a long time. I'm happy that the youth have stepped up their game and we don't need the old guard so much any more.
