I think that they were appealing to people who they knew had clinched to give them a chance at something they dream about playing. For the US, a loss meant nothing, and they wanted a bit of sympathy. Yeah, they should have done better, and it's entirely their fault. That said, I can't say that I don't understand a "Give us a chance to live" mentality. Should we have really laid down for them? No. Would I have minded them winning and us playing laid back? A little bit.
On the flip side, I love Jurgen's remarks about winning every match.

Boyd is such a classy guy. Even if for some reason he never pans out I'm glad he chose to play for us.
