I haven't really dug Villafana, but he has played really good game so far.

Novakovich is fast

Our midfield future is bright. The SB baws are gonna have to crowd fund shades.

My comment had nothing to do with the thread.
Look at the title of the OP. Just agreeing with that. And how sad the soccer situation in this country is.

He's apparently been playing really well in Mexico.

Great result tonight. One observation: The players who played tonight find their roots in America, Colombia, England, Liberia, Israel, Poland, Mexico, Estonia, Serbia, Japan, El Salvador, and Jamaica. We really are a melting pot and it's something that will always make me proud of being American.

Fun facts in case anyone missed these: LSU basketball legend Howard Carter's son is on the team and went the full 90 at CB (he's a beast, just like Hi-C), and another player's dad is the president of Liberia/former world player of the year George Weah. It sucks to miss a world cup but the young players on the US are pretty fun to watch and I'm looking forward to the future.

Another fun fact: Tim Weah's dad and Darlington Nagbe's dad were teammates for Liberia.

Cool, I thought he was a liability during qualifying, but it looks like he is developing.

ETA: Had to make it bigger.

These young guys have a ways to go, but it looks very promising.

Tony Meola brought up a good point about the youth teams competing and finishing well in their world cups. Thats a pretty big deal for future improvement.

One of many reasons why I think people are off base when they say "US soccer is broken."

One thing that I think helped tonight is that Steffen, Miazga, and CCV all started during the U20 WC. One thing we didn't get much during qualifying this last go around was games with the same GK and CBs.

Yeah having a core defensive group like that going forward is really going to help. They've already played a ton of games together so they've got that chemistry and understanding.

Well considering you were talking about his development, it seemed like that's the point you were trying to make.

Basically, you suck at message boarding.

Not broken, but we definitely have to make a great coaching hire come July.

Yeah, I didn’t worry much at the time about our U23 teams failing to qualify for the Olympics the past two cycles, but looking back, that was definitely a huge warning sign for the disastrous WC cycle we just had. Our player pool in the 24-28 range, which ideally should be the core of the teams, is pretty barren of talent. Several bad crops in a row, and we paid the price.

Luckily our 17-23 range is much, much better. MLS academies are starting to pay dividends. The future is bright if we continue to develop that talent. Hopefully four years from now, we look at October 2017 as the low point of modern US Soccer and have that firmly in the rear-view mirror.
