A tag would never happen in Europe as there are multiple leagues. I dislike the idea of a franchise tag. Once someone fulfills the term of their contract, they shouldn't have to stay for an extra year. That would never fly in any other industry. The only reason the NFL can get away with it is because there are not any alternative leagues.

Regardless, I agree with you. It still isn't better than retaining your 3 young superstars though, which is the entire point.
Still, 45m to Southampton can go pretty quickly. They can spend it trying to stay in the league, but that is a huge gamble in and of itself. They recently spent somewhere between £12-15m on Gaston Ramirez, who is a decent player, but has been a bust at that price. Small clubs like this are good finding at raw talent, not refined talent (which is what they would need). There is also the problem of convincing refined talent (if they can find it) to actually sign with them. Plus the clubs they will be buying from know they are now sitting on piles of cash, so they lose a good bit of their leverage in that negotiating scenario.

I disagree. It's business. Other players will come to terms with it. This is why Wayne Rooney is still in Manchester after throwing a tantrum and Roy Keane was on the first plane/train/automobile out of Manchester to Glasgow after his outburst. I would also assume that this is why Kevin Grosskreutz hasn't killed Lewa and why Lewa is ostensibly playing well.
This isn't America (minus MLB, I guess) where teams are on similar financial playing fields and, theoretically, on similar competitive playing fields. Players need to retain the ability to move to greater financial and competitive levels.
Could small clubs be protected more than they already are? Sure. However, they aren't helpless, e.g., training compensation. Players also can't actually "refuse to play" without consequences, and at the end of the day, it's a two-way street. Clubs just simply aren't in complete control.

Pretty good. Lallana is making waves with England. He was outstanding against Denmark last week.
And Shaw, while still just 18, has shown signs of being a potential top player. He grew up a Chelsea fan and they have inquired about him in the past, as well as Arsenal too.

Lallana's been my favorite player to watch that doesn't play for Liverpool this year. Would hate for him to be playing for MU.

Southampton has become my favorite team outside of Chelsea after watching Lalanna, Shaw and Lambert.
Really enjoy their style, especially as a mid table club.

Apparently his parents live less than a mile form Chelsea's training grounds in Cobham and he's spent a lot of time there. Chelsea makes a lot of sense for Shaw.

Azpilicueta (sp?) has been solid for Chelsea this year...can Shaw really replace him on the 1st team? Would Shaw even consider Chelsea as a rotation player for a couple of years?

Cole is 32 and is already out of favor with Mourinho. Azpilicueta has started a few games at LB with Ivanovic at RB. I don't think Jose would think twice about offloading Cole for Shaw. Not to mention Cole's contract is up this summer and he may just move on. (If I'm not mistaken)

I expect Cole to get moved. The bigger question is Shaw > Spaniard by enough to warrant a transfer run at him?

I think you would see Azpilicueta at LB and Ivanovic at RB and they would rotate in Shaw at LB and potentially Kalas (depending on progress) at RB. It would definitely be a revolving door of sorts.
ETA: even if Shaw is not good enough to step in right away (I personally don't think he's quite ready), I think you go for him without a doubt! Just to "ensure" the future.
