Fred was the facilitator.

Historically suspect on the Continent. WC Final was the product of pressure to make the match a contest, instead of a blowout.
Not just doing the devils advocate thing here, but is there really any way this is accurate? Pressure from who?
ETA I may have misunderstood what you were saying

Just checked the ref's wiki page and this was posted:

Fifa needs to at least go to replay on penalty calls. Players have become too fast for only one ref to judge imo.

I´m sure his pregame instruction was ´we want to see a match´. As in, no blowout. As in, do what you´ve got to do (or cast an oblivious eye) to make this look contested, and not a yawnfest which is over by the 40th minute.

I can't think of another time where he was this awful so hopefully it was just a fluke.
How many J-League games do you watch?

Won't deny that. But he was an example of how pressure can get to a referee. He hasn't been the same sort of referee since the WC final. He's not even decent anymore.
yeah, poor sod. Even his parents are affected. Shame, really. But hey, had he done his job properly, he´d be the shining beacon of England, wouldn´t he? Being English, he would have easily supplanted Collina as the supreme pontif. Easily.

Puyol would have been sent off and Spain would still be looking for its first World Cup trophy.

Oh you.
The Dutch would've been down to 9 men before that challenge even occurred. And Spain would've easily scored on them, resulting in no extra time where the Puyol challenge occurred (if memory serves right)
But hey, if its and buts were candy and nuts, right?

lol, I'd love to see what you think should have been the 2nd red card.

It doesn't.

I thought it was widely accepted that de Jong and van Bommel should have been sent off in the final?

It was in the 83rd minute, so I stand corrected. I do feel that if both players had been justly sent off prior to this, the game would have been a blowout by the 83rd.

Refereeing will be a problem for anyone who plays Brazil. Their crowd will have a huge impact as to how the game will be called. Brazil's last two goals should have never happened. The penalty was one of the worse you'll see and their 3rd goal should have never happened because Rakitic got mugged on that play and it was never called. That disallowed goal was sketchy too, there was no foul committed on the goalie. Croatia deserved a tie if not the win.
