The International beautiful game

In 2006 I got my first taste of big time soccer by way of the world cup. I will always remember the first team to catch my eye was the Netherlands and those orange uniforms. Four years later I had managed to know most of the roster for the US team(World Cup). In between that Id watch a few MLS games on HDnet or ESPN.
I see the difference with MLS and World Cup and said that I bet it is even more hard core for the Euro. Now ESPN shows a bunch of the Euro championships and some premiere legue.
But, man is it hard as frick to keep track of all the teams, legues, and players in Europe. I do not know how you guys do it. I find it over welhming at times trying to remeber who plays where. I like watching the sport and plan to increase my knowledge to that of say CFB, NFL or NBA. Is there something I am missing? How do you guys keep up with your soccer info?

Most of the people on here know more than me. I keep it simple. I know quite a bit about EPL teams and the English international team and I like watching the US national team. That's about it for me. The best tip is to narrow down what leagues/international teams you are interested in. No way can almost anyone learn every team/league/players.

I initially learned who a lot of the teams/players were by playing FIFA on Xbox. Then I started watching it more on TV and reading about it online. There's really no way to keep up with all the leagues, you kinda have to pick 2 or 3 to follow.
I follow the EPL, MLS, and International matches mostly. I try to watch Italian, Spanish, and German soccer when I can.
You can watch games on Gol TV, FoxSoccer, and ESPN networks for starters.

I'm from England and I follow the players more because obviously more play for the England international team. In addition, I think most will say it is the most publicized league, possibly the most popular, and possibly the deepest in terms of talent.

that's a good way to do it as well. Alot of people pick their favorite teams this way as well.

I was in the same boat as you when I first started following the sport, it was overwhelming...
I just drawn in so deep I started watching and reading all I could...
Now, all my interest is primarily focused towards European soccer (and some South American). I dont know that much about the ins and outs of MLS, but watch occasionally and I always watch the USA.
There are also some very knowledgeable posters on the board that know a lot about some of the leagues I wasnt as familiar with.
Over a period of time my focus on other sports outside of soccer has been down graded to headlines and gameday...

yeah I, and the OP I'm assuming, could never do that.

Well that makes sense. I actually ran into a English fella at the camp ground I was at for 4th of July. He expressed these exact thoughts to me then. He also didn't STFU about Vinnie Jones!!
Other than AC Milan and Real Madrid... England goes have the most pub from what I can tell. Manchester seems like soccer central.
What about American players on Euro pro legues. Is there any set way that goes? Or does the best players go to the highest bidder?? Draft?? someone have a quick run down?

usually EPL or MLS as far as I know. A few in Scotland but with the (temporary?) demise of Rangers, they will likely leave ASAP.

Well after growing up with American sports for over 30 years, I dont really need to spend that much time understanding leagues, tactics/strategy... But, I am primarily a LSU/Saints guy w/my Hornets interest peaked...

I very much get the comment now about sports outside of soccer being reduced to gameday and headlines. I feel like I am at that corssroads with sports in genral. Honestly how many times to I have to hear about NFL ESPN really? Nothing changes, it is all the same.
I got one more random question. Is their a thread on here that you guys do a power rankings for teams or even individual players?

I haven't seen one for teams I don't believe but that's a cool idea. There is a thread every once in awhile for the best starting XI.

Not to my knowledge... Usually people just debate the best leagues, etc.

I've watched entirely too many movies solely because Vinnie Jones was in them
Best Vinnie Jones role:

They are generally bought and sold or move as "free agents"

Power rankings for European teams could be an enjoyable thread however a lot of it would be as much opinion as for players since only in the Champions League do many teams play each other. There's also Europa League but the results are often more determined by how seriously certain clubs take it.
There's the UEFA rankings of the teams that are used to seed CL/EL but it's more based on 3 or 4 past years and, so about as far from the idea of a "power ranking" as you can get. For example, Man City and Juventus would both be ranked pretty low since they weren't that good 2-3 seasons ago but right now they're both pretty clearly top 10 or better sides.

Wikipedia was a big help to me when I started as far as figuring out tournament and competition formats. The Web sites already listed on here are good.
Another good source for information is Twitter.
Personally, I enjoy keeping up with MLS and to a lesser extent, EPL and international teams. After that, I just play around on the Soccer Board here and learn what I can from others.

Since you look like a Ragin' Cajun, I'll take you under my wing. Stick with me kid, you'll be a Bundesliga expert in no time.

Most here follow the EPL because it is easy to follow compared to the other leagues and it is arguably the best league. I follow the US national team first and foremost, EPL, and I'm starting to watch more MLS. You should consider playing the EPL fantasy game when the season starts back up. It's free and a lot of fun. I already had a decent knowledge of teams and players in the EPL, but tracking my team got me interested in a lot more games and brought to my attention players that I'd never really heard of before.
