I thought the 'Pool defense was pretty good actually. Especially with Salah out and Madrid able to not having to keep turned to run back.

Our GK had two horrible plays. More than he's had his whole (half) season combined. Sucks.

Other than that, it took a wondergoal. They didn't get much else.
Agreed. The narrative before was our defense is shite and they played well. Obviously Madrid don't need a lot of chances to capitalize and take advantage and that's what happened, but our backline with a bunch of no names didn't look out of place at all

Your goalie made two of the most laughably bad mistakes in footballing history. We don't even have to reach at all. Your team handed us enough banter for ten seasons. This is like Slippy G on steroids.
Have you met Adam Bogdan and Simon Mignolet???

I'll take some dumb mistakes from a 24 year old in a situation he's never been in, than some of the crap keeping I've seen from us the past 3 years

They did well in the first half, but Madrid played it very conservatively with Isco instead of Bale. I would have loved to see how Madrid would have played with Bale on the field. The game probably would have been too open for Madrid's liking though. Bale came on at the right time in the game.

Salah going off changed a lot too. They were able to play higher up and squeeze the space between our front line and midfield to control even more possession while pushing Marcelo further forward.

The Klopp system relies very much on defending as a team with the press and maintaining good shape, while also having options available for counter attack to keep the opposition in check and to keep from pushing too far forward. I've seen it happen to us too many times when Salah comes off and we lose that threat. See second leg at Roma the last 10 minutes or whatever or when we've tried to defend with 10 men, see City away in the league. We're just not a team set up to defend in a low block and absorb wave after wave of pressure

Imagine being so concerned about a team that you make up a song about when another team beat them.

Yeah, that's kind of the thing with this Real Madrid team. Its not like they have 2012 Ronaldo, where they can find him out wide 40 yds from goal, and he'll either get to the end line or cut in and punish you. They aren't going to break you down and destroy you. Casemiro doesn't provide a whole lot going forward, Kroos occasionally gets involved but is mostly allergic to releasing Benz/Ronaldo focusing on ball retention, and while Modric can get involved, he doesnt focus upon that. Liverpool looked good defensively, but Ronaldo still got 3 half/full chances, and Bale was able to get isolated on the other flank. Isco is obviously excellent, but he runs hot and cold.

Completely agree. I think the threat of Salah forced Madrid to go more conservative. Without the spare man, Madrid might have been more errant, as they really struggled to build out from the back.

I agree again, which is a problem with Klopp's methodology. It's a small problem to have if you have enough depth though.

This is key. Madrid is able to switch between systems at ease, and even when they were playing the higher line after Salah went off, Pool could rarely get a through ball. Madrid's tactic is interesting in that one midfield player always goes to the man while the rest of the team resets into shape. It's sort of the opposite of counter-pressing. The intent is simply to delay the opposition. Madrid is also better then any team in the world at those small little fouls that refs rarely card for. It's like they have a rotation system for fouling.

Not sure when it's gonna happen, but they are gonna splash some cash on a forward to help replace Ronaldo, a midfielder to help replace Modric, and a CB to replace Ramos and it's gonna totally frick the market again

Asensio, Vasquez, Kovacic, and Nacho are all very good options to replace those guys, but Perez doesn't strike me as someone that's gonna be ok with letting them go through growing pains and leaving behind the Galacticos era...
