Strongly disagree. World Cup is more important.

Confed Cup doesn't really mean all that much to be honest. I'd rather gear up for 2014.

You can cap tie people in friendlies. There are about 12 FIFA dates between now and next summer. There aren't that many "on the fence" players to worry about.

Confed Cup '09 gave this team the confidence to not fold the tent like they did in '06.

I think winning Gold Cup '11 will be a top priority for US Soccer.

I think an international tournament is what locks a player in.

Matches played on "official" FIFA dates (i.e. "A" friendlies) cap tie players.

Has to be a FIFA sponsored event.

All right, thanks. Never have been clear on those rules.

I think FIFA does that on purpose.

There are 8 (I think) "official" match dates between now and next summer.

I can't imagine Mwanga will be play for Congo. That would be like Luol Deng playing for Sudan or El Duque (post coming to the US) playing for Cuba. And unlike Zakuani, he doesn't have any option besides us.

Luis Gil is drawing comparisons to Cesc Fabregas, how about that?

Too bad we are going to stop our tremendous improvement over the past 2 decades and start sucking again

But seriously, I hope he pans out. Youth players are tough to figure out for many reasons, but it seems like the current group of 15-20 year olds, combined with the existing talent gives us a real base for 2014-2022.

Apparently Arsenal really wanted him to sign but his dad, who barely speaks English thought it'd be better for him to be in the USA.

No, I was just kidding about the fans who think we will never be good because we lost one tight game.

I think in the next decade we will go from 10-15 in the world (right now) to 5-10.

I like the central midfield partnership of Bradley and Edu, its young and talented and I think they work pretty well together.

But then again we have good options for a 4-3-3 in midfield. Edu as the D-mid, Bradley as a box to box guy and somebody else like Torres, Holden or Benny holding down the third spot. Add in Jones, maybe Gil, even guys like Charles Renken could be a possibility by 2014 if he pans out. That Joseph Gyau guy is another young guy I've heard good things about. Both of those guys are 16 or so but so was Jozy at this time in 2006. And Mikael Diskerud looks like a possibility.

Just speculating if we went with something like that then you'd have Donovan, Dempsey, Jozy, Davies to play up front along with guys like Mwanga, McInerney, etc.

On the back line I assume Gooch if he stays healthy would be a fixture since he'll just be 32. Tim Reem is an interesting prospect. Spector needs to stop regressing and Bornstein has looked a lot better lately. Add in Castillo and who's that German-American guy that plays right back in the bundesliga, Williams or something like that. Right now the back four looks the most open to changes since there are some age issues with some of the guys who started for us there in this WC.

A 4-3-3 would be interesting. It might be helpful, too, with Donovan and Dempsey being "up there" in age at that time, if they can play up top and put some younger guys in the midfield. I still feel a 4-4-2, with Altidore and Davies up top and a guy like Mwanga off the bench, then Donovan, Edu, Bradley, and Dempsey in the midfield, and maybe a Torres/Holden/Feilhaber coming off the bench would be good. Some REALLY good forwards/midfielders of ours are gonna have to sit in 2014.

And I agree, our D's the most questionable part of the team right now. If we can figure that out, we'll be really solid in 2014.

He had two games where he didn't make a major mistake. He still didn't jump out as playing great football. Let's not jump the gun here.
