Somewhat fitting that this World Cup third place match is at "Miami Stadium"

Starting with the 1960 season going through the 1969 season the NFL played the "Playoff Bowl" at the Orange Bowl in Miami. It was created as a way to generate more money for the players' pension fund. From 1960 through 1966 when the NFL had merely a "Western Division" and an "Eastern Division" the division winners met for the NFL title. The second place finishers met in the Playoff Bowl with modest --even for that era, payouts for the winners and losers. It wasn't like the NIT where you could decline.
When the NFL expanded playoffs with the four divisions in 1967 the two first round playoff losers then met in the Playoff Bowl. Starting with the merger in 1970 the NFL put this to rest.

100 heat index with humidity is a rough consolation prize
