Should MLS ditch the conferences and the playoffs?

Would it be a good idea to move toward the European system? Each team plays each other twice and the team with the most points wins the league title. Top 3 get an automatic bid to the to the Champions League and the winner of the US Open Cup gets the 4th spot. If the Open Cup winner is already in the top 3 then that spot goes to the 4th place team in the league. The Supporters Shield becomes a preseason game between the league champion and the open cup winner (or 2nd place team in the league).

it's an American league, why can't we use an American system? We don't have to copy the Euro system just cause.
Oh and they have the Supporter's Shield for whoever has the most points if you're into single table.

I hate using a playoff to determine a league winner, so I'm definitely in favor the European system.

I think the European season is a little more fair. It rewards the team that's been the best all season instead of the one that gets hot late in the year.

I think the playoff system could be adjusted. Right now nearly half the league gets to go to the playoffs and this year the West is a lot better than the East. You could get rid of the conferences and maybe take the top 6, put them in 2 different groups, and then the group winners play in a final.

I think the system of playing every team home and away is the most fair system and I am a huge advocate of trying to be more fair about deciding a champion. However, it is clear that MLS management not only doesn't want to add more games, they want to reduce the number of regular season games. Combine that with the goal of getting to 24 teams by 2020 and I don't think there is anyway they go to a European system any time soon.
I do like that the Supporters Shield winner is guaranteed a Champions League spot.

Yes, no. Conferences are completely pointless, but playoffs are what bring the mouthbreathing casuals in.

Yeah I heard that the league may cut 6 games out of the schedule. Isn't one of the problems with our national team players in the MLS is they don't get enough playing time while in England you play in a shite ton of games. A lot of times you play 2 games a week.

I think MLS doesn't like their best players missing regular season games because they are on the same weekends as FIFA international tournaments.

I do agree that MLS should go on an international break like other leagues do but they find a way to play more games. I'm sure it works better with an August to May schedule with the summer internationals. Maybe for MLS you go on a summer break and start the season a little earlier and end it a little later.

Not a chance that Conferences and playoffs are eliminated. If they could do a single table I would be for it but with more than 20 teams it isn't a good idea.
Plus with the parity of MLS, they have a greater necessity for playoffs than other leagues.

Yeah, I guess trying to avoid Northeast winter is part of their reasoning and they are already ending in late November.
I wouldn't mind a longer regular season and less playoff teams, though.
ETA: But, on second thought, that might not be as fun with no relegation system.
ETA2: Maybe not do a home and away for a couple of the playoff rounds and add two more regular season matches.

In an ideal world MLS would stay at 20 teams and then absorb the NASL and turn it into MLS2 or whatever. BTW didn't Russia go to a traditional schedule?

If by "traditional", you mean autumn to spring, then yes, according to Wikipedia:

I don't mind it. It prevents there being a league champion before the season ends. I love the table system when days like when Manchester City (...those bitches) won the league in literally the last minutes of the season. I just think this system will allow Americans to casually gain interest in it instead of being forced to learn something else.
