We'd have been in a real pinch to qualify (without going to a playoff with Uruguay) without Conor Casey.

Gooch also played regularly for Sporting Lisbon and recently transferred to Malaga. Being that both of these leagues are better than the SPL according to you, and because someone playing in a higher league must be better according to your logic, Gooch must be better than Edu.

This is not my logic. When the hell have I said that? That's a horrible transition and a strawman argument. There are individual bad players in every league. Gooch might play well occasionally in Portugal, but he's not quick enough to play at a high standard for the national team. Edu might play in a slow league like the SPL, but the league's overall play has no bearing on his speed at the international level.

I think the SPL is shite, because the quality of play is shite. Celtic and Rangers have a few quality players, but all of them get sold elsewhere if they're good enough to play in any league better than the Belarussian Premier League. I don't think Edu (Jelevic, or Forster, or Ki or whoever) is a bad player because the league sucks. The overall talent at Inverness, Motherwell, Hibernian is significantly poorer than a majority of the major leagues in Europe.

I'll agree to disagree with you on Clark. He had a nice goal in a friendly against Colombia in January. His recent competitive national team appearances were horrendous. He cost us a goal against Ghana and England, and took the place of an in-form Maurice Edu. He won't see significant national team minutes again besides those January friendlies.

I have no problem with some of your players assessments, but many of them are blinded by bias; particularly in the case of Edu, whose stats last night refuted your points.

FWIW using message board postings to strengthen your argument doesn't help your case. I'm not going to use the Tiger Rant to gauge the talent of a particular player.

Conor Casey may be a below average MLS striker nowadays, but he got us a hat trick in Tegucigalpa, right?

Yea and who is to say if someone else would have played they wouldn't have done the same thing. He was never USMNT quality. Not even close.

I love this thought process.

He is exactly "USMNT quality." So is Mo Edu. So is Ricardo Clark. So is Jose Torres. So is Benny Feilhaber. So is DaMarcus Beasley.

That's why we're usually ranked somewhere between 10 and 30 internationally.

The vast majority of our players are not of "international quality", which is what I assume you meant.

Howard is "international quality", as are Dempsey, Donovan and Bradley. You could maybe, *maybe* make a pitch for Bocanegra and Cherundolo.

Past that.... it's a whole bunch of players that range somewhere from "mediocre" to "not terrible" to "not bad."

THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE.

So people dismiss large swaths of our player pool as useless and worthless.

"Well, frick, He isn't Pirlo or Xavi or even Gerrard. Bring in the next guy! He'll be a world beater. Freddy Adu. He's the answer. This Torres kid.... he's the answer."

No. No they aren't.

Instead of looking at our role players as exactly that, people turn their noses up at them. "Well, this frick couldn't step on the field with Barca, why the frick am I watching him?" Look at the players for the abilities that they DO have, and what they can bring to the table, and how they fit.

Conor Casey was a slow footed behemoth with a pretty solid nose for goal, who was a pain in the arse to deal with in the box.

You may remember the first of the 2006 World Cup.... a slow footed behemoth from the Czech Republic with a pretty solid nose for goal, who was a pain in the arse to deal with in the box absolutely stomped our dicks in the dirt.

Yea you are going off on some rant. It is simple. He wasn't good enough for the National team period. Beasley was good enough for a while. I guess the 2002 WC slipped your mind. Edu is on a mid table EPL team. I'm pretty sure he didn't win a raffle to get there either. Stoke must see something in him. They picked up Cameron too another American. One that is praised so I guess Stoke kinda have an idea on who has talent. To put Ricardo Clark and Benny Feilhaber at the same level as Edu or Beasley is giving way to much credit to Benny and Ricardo I screw up World Cups Clark.

No I meant he was never good enough for the national team.

I have been saying this. Check the other US Soccer threads. We need to play the best team not the best set of individuals. Klinnsman has not been able to get that right most of the time so far.

Conor Casey proved his worth to the national team, as has Feilhaber, and Ricardo Clark.

Even Jonathan Bornstein has.

In fact, all have played well enough at the national team level to show that their inclusion in the side was merited. Yes, even Bornstein.

They've also proven why they don't have a permanent spot in or around the team, as has the vast majority of our player pool.

Wow. Sorry but Bornstein has done nothing good for the US National team. The fact that you think his inclusion was merited is baffling to say the least.

oh, he's been bad more than he's been good, and really "shite the bed" as they say, more than once.

but to say...

"Sorry but Bornstein has done nothing good for the US National team"

Is just patently false.

Ok lets do a scoreboard then.

Bornstein
Positive contributions - .01% of the time
Negative contributions - 99.9% of the time

There Jed. Now it isn't patently false. BTW Bornstiein is the worst player to put on a national team shirt since we quit using college players.
