How does BRSC select work? How intense are practices, how often, and how much travel? Is there a less demanding alternative? I know BRSC recreational kind of sucks now.

Why do you say recreational sucks? I rather enjoy it.

Part of it depends on age and what level team they make. The higher level team for each age group, the "black" team, typically will travel more than the others. You may have a tournament or two in fall and spring, usually in Lafayette, NO, Mandeville or Jackson, MS. The black team may travel to Texas, MS, Arkansas, Alabama, etc. depending on what leagues BRSC puts them in. This is usually u13 or u14 and up. Younger ages usually stay closer.

The have tryouyts every spring/summer. If you're a very good player, you can usually try out whenever.

Practice twice a week, usually. Practice intensity depends on the coach, but usually they aren't terribly intense.

You travel around South Louisiana every weekend, and go to out of state tournies once or twice a month.

There is a tier between club and rec that has some good teams that do a decent amount of traveling

I played club for 7ish years at BRSC
