After a disagreement with Hull City's David Meyler, the Magpies manager apparently made contact with the midfielder and was dismissed by referee Kevin Friend.
Pardew objected to being moved out the way by the Irishman as he tried to retrieve the ball for a throw-in.
After squaring up to the 24-year-old, he appears to became more aggressive and headbutt him.
The incident provoked plenty of reaction on Twitter, with Gary Lineker labelling it "inexcusable for a manager".
