At 32 I think it's a great acquisition. Guy is incredible.

Is he still incredible? I've not seen him play since Madrid. He was, but is he now just fallen off so now onto MLS (not that MLS is a bad thing)

Was he a little older when he broke out? I thought he was really young and would be around for a while when I first learned who he was. I feel like he was here and gone so fast.
Anyways, I'm pretty excited that he'll be in Orlando. I'll have to go catch my first ever soccer match.

How incredible does he need to be? Guillermo Schelotto left Boca (BOCA! BOCA!) in his mid thirties and went to MLS and led the league in goals.

Kaka will turn 33 in 2015 #MLS season. Had 37 appearances for AC Milan last season with 9 goals and 5 assists.

I don't know. He won MVP or something. I don't really follow MLS. I should, though.

There were a BUNCH of Orlando City shirts at the game in Jacksonville. Surprised me a bit.

That's cool, though. I hope the team does well.

He doesn't of course. He's a big name and will draw attendance. I'm just wondering when we get to the point when we aren't a league where people go to get paid when they aren't quite ready to retire. I mean, I'll watch, just like I'll watch villa, but he wasn't fantastic at Madrid and I didn't know how much more his play may have dropped off.

It will be still be a league where old players go to get paid, until it rivals the competitive level of a second tier European league.
However, that doesn't define the league at all these days in the slightest. Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake played in the final last year using quality American players and a few Latin American misfits.
Tim Cahill and Robbie Keane were the best foreign DPs in the league last year. I don't think New York and LA were as excited about their marketing value as they were when Henry and Beckham signed.

frick YEAH. Love this move.
He could have stayed at Milan. He has a connection to OCSC's owner and decided to come here instead.
It's a good thing 32 is only a retirement age after a player decides to come to MLS.

I mean - Robbie Keane, Tim Cahill and Henry probably had no other options - Europe or otherwise.
It was probably either bring the Geritol and denture cream to MLS or just flat out retire.
Lucky guys that they were able to dupe someone into paying them when clearly no one else would have.

Its exactly why MLS gets labeled a retirement league. The older DP's get paid well over their market value by the MLS. Hell even Deuce, Omar and Bradley are paid over market value. But I can't hate on Bradley anymore after hearing his reason why he moved b/c he wanted to be the focal point of the team.
But outside that MLS is paying well over market value for these old guys.
Old Foreign guys 2014 Salaries.
Thierry Henry - $4,350,000
Robbie Keane - $4,333,333
Marco Di Vaio - $2,600,000 (This is absurd)
Tim Cahill - $3,625,000
David Villa - will be around 4-5 Million
No word on Lampard yet
These guys are not old but still paid over market value.
Jermain Defoe - $6,180,000
Obafemi Martins - $1,753,333
Pedro Morales - $1,410,900
Gilberto - $1,205,000 I have no words

quote:Henry and Beckham were marquis MLS signings with huge purses. So be it. Cahill arrived with not a lot of fanfare but for yes good money and has absolutely torn it up since. He was Red Bull's mvp last season IMO. I've enjoyed watching him totally outhustle all the young bucks in WC play.

While their salaries are a bit ridiculous the MLS needs to draw more attention to itself and I think bringing these guys in is one of the key ways to do it. Nowadays it seems like homegrown teams that are not driven by a DP are winning but the only reason I even watched MLS at first was Thierry Henry and Beckham. Whatever their strategy for growing seems to work right now. Not to mention the fact that the Australian, Saudi Arabian, Qatari, etc. leagues will also pay these guys drives the prices up.
As for Kaka, he was in a bad situation this year but I think he has 2-3 decent years left.
