There is this misconception on the part of the soccer-ites - that we don't dig it because we haven't given it a chance. This is just not true.

You, then, are the first on this board.

And most of the people who watch U.S. soccer are Americans, not recent immigrants. Immigration isn't a recent thing, everyone in this country is an immigrant from somewhere, but if these immigrants were skewing the data, we would have noticed in 2002 or 2006.

How? If they are illegal immigrants? And illegal immigration into this country has increased since 2002 and 2006.

Basketball and baseball also are hugely popular in the Hispanic community. Would you say that the NBA Finals ratings will be skewed because lots of Hispanics like the Lakers? I doubt it, because basketball is an established sport that you don't want to bash.

If you tried, and you don't like it, that's fine. But you are the only person "whining" about it getting increased coverage.

Nah - I'm just the only one who made that observation on a different board and had it moved over here.

I had no intention of taunting a bunch of soccer-ites. Just used the "open letter" as a device to illustrate an observation that I made. Carry on with your talk of pitches and nils and midfielders and David Beckham.

PS - I did like the movie "Victory," if that makes you guys feel better.

Do you have a link for that? I can only find that the illegal immigration rate was 8% for the whole of the 2000s.

Yes, but my point it soccer is more important around the world and when you bring people from around the world into one place (America) it will skew the results. I know areas in Cali are heavy with the hispanic community. So dont assume I wont say something bad about the sports I do like just because you wouldnt.

It was a brilliant observation indeed. Every four years someone comes out of the woodwork proclaiming some original thought of some type about ESPN and the WC. It's trite and tired.

At least you know who Beckham is. BTW he's not playing.

This is not an "observation"
quote:

So, ESPN, please quit trying to make me interested in the world cup. It's awful. I'm never going to get into it. Not now. And not when some chick takes her top off after a goal. OK - that part I liked, but not the 90 minutes leading up to it. Let the world have its cup. Let us have our stuff. Quit wasting your energy trying to make us care.

If you had said, "hey, why is espn using all this money to advertise something that I don't think is that popular? That seems dumb on their part" That is an observation.

Hockey is dying a slow death b/c they are not promoting the support enough.
As evidenced by the higher attendance numbers than the NBA and TV ratings that are at a ten year high. Once again, stop promoting soccer by bashing other sports, particularly when your bashing is, well, a lie.

I love soccer, but I completely understand why people are turned off by soccer fans. While I have no sympathy for anyone starting a thread to bash a sport (that just makes you an a-hole), in their defense of soccer, several fans have taken it upon themselves to rip on football, baseball, and hockey... proving they are no different than anti-soccer people, they just are fanatical about a different sport. Stop bashing other sports in order to prop up your own sport. It's off-putting.

I'm opposed to anyone ripping on another sport. Except figure skating, which is crooked as a politician.

The only reason that you perceive soccer folks as "whining and moaning" about the popularity of sport is because many Americans feel the need to trash it. At the end of the day, I think a lot of the hatred comes down to the fact that the sport is so globally popular but we're not one of the top teams and don't house one of the top leagues. Americans don't like being considered second tier.

For a sport that Americans "don't care about" it sure seems to provoke a lot of emotions... good or bad.

Oh and hello everyone.

A literary device is often used to make an observation - even though it does not look like an observation on its face. In this case the "open letter" format was chosen as the device to illustrate the observation. You see, observations do not all have to begin with a Seinfeld-esque "Ever notice that Ovaltine is in a Round can?" or some other announcement that an observation is coming. Sometimes a person making the observation can slip it in there as something else, such as an "open letter."

Not to mention, I would think that ESPN cares cares and knows a bit more about attracting a young impressionable fan base than some old coots (not the OP, but most soccer haters tend to be old) in the South who are set in their ways.

Why does this skew the results? These immigrants aren't going anywhere. Why should their support not be counted when discussing the increased popularity of soccer in the US?
