Football accounting is a shady animal.
City has Shiekh money, plus other family members as investing sponsors, plus other umbrella companies taking on other staff wages, etc.
It's all a very grey matter, and the way we're run right now, we just can't match that.

Right. That's kind of the direction my mind was going. I feel like FSG has done a good job, but they are too cheap it seems like.

I don't think cheap is fair to them. They've done a lot for the club, just not always straight towards players.
They've done a lot for the marketing, anfield, redoing the pitch now, etc. A lot of the small things to help build a sustainable business model so that you don't need to just throw money at it. Going for a United/Arsenal model.
They're not just a sugar daddy, but I think they've shown to be good business men in helping the club run more efficiently. Not to mention they've helped us get out of a ton of debt too.

My take on a realistic starting XI in august. A side that can beat anyone in the world but won't hold up over the course of the season. Even selling Sturridge, I think if we land Keita, Van Djik, and Salah then we're looking at around £130 in expenses and I don't see them spending much more than that- so adding more players that are starter quality seems far fetched.

City is a toy for a rich Saudi. Pool is a business for FSG looking to turn a profit. FSG is very good at what they do, but it's a business to them, and not a toy.

I mean, city's value has increased by 5x since he took over...so while what you said isn't totally false, it's not totally true either. Gotta spend money to make money
From a fans perspective I just want to see the club win. I couldn't care less how much money it's making already wealthy owners. We don't get a trophy for being a fiscally responsible club. Missing out on guys we want over a few million pounds and settling for a player we rate below him isn't going to net us any substantial hardware in this climate. We have the manager in place to bring home the bacon, they need to buy the guys he wants to make it happen

I feel FSG was perfect at the time and they have dug us out of the hole we were in. They improved the stadium, improved the books and have hired the perfect manager. At this point though I feel they have reached their limit and need to sell to somebody who can at least compete at the highest level of world football financially. If they don't do this then this group of owners will become a hinderance to the club on the pitch. They weren't in it forever anyway, you did the job now make a big profit and go buy a pitcher with it.

Joyce saying Salah and LFC have agreed to 90k a week. fricking pay up FSG. Lets get it done.

Solenke and Salah would be a nice opening round.

All indications are we lost VVD to City.
Posted on 6/3/17 at 9:28 pm to JackVincennes
If it really was for 60ish million then I'm fine with that. VVD is a good player, but not that good.

I have a feeling our rivals are gonna be throwing that cash around like it's cool this summer. Let's just hope we can spend Mane-like. We still desperately need quality in several starting places in the back. I sure hope we can get Keita though, I think he is the one worth breaking the bank.

Holding out hope... The Echo is reporting this morning that VVD to City is not a done deal and we remain in the hunt..

My dream summer would be landing those 3... I am holding out hope..
With the rumored buys, I see Klopp sticking to a 4-3-3... Salah on the right and Mane moving over to the left... inverted wingers seem to suit our personnel much better.. though I imagine it will be pretty fluid... we should get our width from the FBs... which is why we have got to replace Milner.. at this point Robertson would be fine, though I'd rather the kid at Celtic..
I think a 2 deep midfield of Coutinho/Lallana, Keita/Gini and Can/Hendo is pretty damn good, with Grujic getting some game time too... I do worry about Hendo's heel though and how that may hinder his future... I am hoping this is Can's year to prove he can be a very good #6
anyone else we sign is lagniappe (though I'd like to add a striker)... but adding those 4 starters to our squad would hopefully see us kick on a level and compete for silverware...

Those three would be incredible with a LB. it sounds like VVD really wants to wear Red and is very impressed with Klopp's plan for our future. The issue is City is willing to get stupid with the cash. I guess we'll just have to hold out hope.

yeah, at some point we can't compete with some of the £ being thrown around... Hopefully, all 3 parties can agree on fees/wages..
I do think that FSG can't just say how much SOTON? done... How much VVD? done.. We have to live within our means...
The £ being thrown around for VVD is absolutely ridiculous, but I do think he could really help transform our team...
If we can regularly play in the UCL, our financial position will only get stronger and Anfield will be a much more desired destination...

Its sounding more and more like the only thing we're waiting on for Salah is the lean... I think this one gets done...
Our attack will be downright scary if he can come close to replicating his Roma form next season...
Moving Phil back to CM... let him pull the strings like in 13/14...
The only thing I don't like is that the next season, we'd lose both him and Mane for a month ... but we can worry about that next summer..
If we sign Keita, we'd lose him too... but I think Gini/Lallana would more than be okay to pick up the slack in MF...

Egypt and Senegal are both pretty much locks to make the tournament and have strong chances to make it out of groups with Senegal possibly being a favorite to win.
I'm curious to see what happens with Lallana. If we sign Keita :crossesfingers: then he would probably take that spot. Will be tough to see considering Adam's been one of the main engines in midfield and has been the important link between midfield and attack and also one of the players that most embodies the pressing and non-stop running machine that Klopp loves. Now he is getting older, and he would be a huge weapon to have on the bench or if someone else isn't 100%. I just hope that doesn't break up the flow of things and how well our team ticks when he's out there.
Posted on 6/4/17 at 2:10 pm to TheZaba
I think Lallana had a better first half of the season and wasn't as effective in the 2nd half... granted, he also got injured and to be fair, that criticism could be said about quite a few in the team..
I think Coutinho now becomes that link and is an upgrade, though doesn't offer the pressing... Keita has that covered and he's very creative... Lallana and Wijnaldum rotating with Coutinho and Keita in the midfield can only be a good thing...

Yea but the thing about Lallana I like the most is his willingness to make runs to open up space. He's like Firmino in that regard.
Sometimes we have too many people that want the ball at their feet and stand around when someone else has it waiting for them to do something, but you also need to have someone making runs.
And I'd argue he was still pretty important coming back from injury because I thought you could immediately see us look more threatening breaking down packed in defenses once he came in the game.
His end product has always been a big question but I thought that picked up this year while also offering a lot of the little things that help make us tick.
Not that it can't work moving other guys around. I love the idea of having another speedy guy up top and true winger to make us even more dangerous on counters and help give us more width.
