I’m trying to get into MLS and soccer in general. I don’t know which or really have any team to root for so I was wondering what the chances of the MLS ever coming to New Orleans or Louisiana in general are? I know the Jesters are doing okay but how is their support? Why are they not more successful? Is it marketing? Branding? Just getting a feel for everything!
Thanks

Honestly probably never. Only chance would be if the plan to get the Jesters into one of the pro leagues and then the USSF allows pro/rep and the Jesters move up a lot. As long as it’s a $100m buy in to MLS we aren’t getting a pro team unfortunately.

Highly unlikely for the time being. Should work on getting a USL team.

How would that work? A bunch of hurdles? Sorry about all of the questions

Kenny Ferrel who is the coach and runs the team is a total jackass and pisses everyone off that he deals with.

Looks like he’s been there awhile too. Getting too comfortable?

If someone magically showed up with money to build a state of the art downtown soccer specific stadium and another $200 million franchise fee then I guess maybe but there’s pretty much no chance of that happening soooo

NOLA is a small market and while there’s a good group of soccer fans here there’s not near enough to support an MLS team. I mean people barely support the NBA team as it is.

The Jesters games are a lot of fun though, hopefully they will have an announcement of where/when they will be playing soon

Not sure what the question is. To get a USL team? I don't think it would be that hard. May be tough to get a team in the Championship (they already have 36), but I'm sure they are looking to expand League One and get it on more solid footing. League One currently has 10 teams, but will have at least 12 in 2020.

That answered it! Thank you.
I guess I’ll need to get into the lower leagues to support local teams. Even with Arthur Blank’s success I don’t see Gale Benson stepping into the MLS waters

New Orleans won’t get an MLS team. Unless we somehow have pro-rel in the future and that team gets promoted all the way up. NOLA is just too small of a market nowadays, and it’s not the type of small market MLS would take a chance on, even if Gayle Benson decides to spend money on an MLS team tomorrow. Louisville and Indianapolis have much higher chances of getting an MLS team because they both have stadium plans and well-supported USL teams.

I think a realistic goal would be for New Orleans to get a USL Championship team. If that team marketed well to the NOLA Hispanic community and soccer fans in Jefferson Parish and the Northshore, I think NOLA could easily support a D2 team. I’m not sure the Jesters will ultimately be that team with Farrell at the helm. We’ll see. If they fail, hopefully someone else gives it a try. I’m not sold on the NPSL Pro at all. I doubt it lasts more than two years.

The last 50 years have not been kind to New Orleans. We can only support the Saints at a major league level, these days. The Pelicans will likely be gone in the next 20 years or so if they can’t start winning with any consistency.

All the Championship and League One games are on ESPN+.

If you’re a soccer fan it seems like ESPN+ is the way to go

Thanks everyone for the info!

It's a great deal at $50/year.

If we do get a USL team we need to go out and get an older player from the Honduran and/or Mexican (Mexico might be harder though) national team, the amount of people with ties to those countries within an 1-1:30 hours of NOLA would easily come out to support the team.

Lower league soccer is great, it’s often much more of a community feeling rather than a corporate one

It's a good fit for the USL Championship I believe.

Meh, as someone who works with Kenny a lot. He has a lot of passion and I think people mistake that a lot. He is extremely passionate about bringing soccer to this city. Can't wait to see what league we are in next year, whether it be USL or NISA.
