The Audi MLS Cup playoffs are undergoing a big change, starting in 2019.
The playoffs will now consist of a fixed-bracket, single-elimination format with the higher seed hosting every match.
quote:
In 2019, 14 of the league's 24 teams will qualify for the postseason, up from 12 in 2018.
Only one team per conference will be given a first-round bye, while the higher-seeded clubs will host all matches, further emphasizing regular season excellence.
Furthermore, there will be no reseeding, so if the No. 7 seed upsets the No. 2 seed, they'll still play the winner of No. 3 vs. No. 6 irrespective of the other results.
quote:
The playoffs will wrap up earlier than in previous years, with the entirety of the bracket being played out between the October and November FIFA international breaks. In 2019, following Decision Day on Oct. 6, the first playoff matches will be played on Oct. 19 with MLS Cup taking place on Nov. 10. Although the regular season will end earlier than in previous years, it will still start at the beginning of March, with the 2019 campaign slated to begin on March 2.

These sound like positive changes. I support this.

Ending the season before the international break is good like it used to be.
Now lets get on the same football calendar as the rest the world and throw in a winter break.

Not crazy about adding another team but I’m sure that’s just planning ahead. No reseeding is interesting but I don’t really have a preference one way or another.

Without relegation, adding an extra playoff team makes the late season games mean more. The new format makes just about every game mean more.

Need this badly in Premier League

yea that's a good way to look at it
these games are going to turn into complete shite shows with how intense they are going to be.

not really
you can have it December and January
the areas that are still cold you have them play away in warm weather areas or indoor stadiums. There are enough of those to set the schedule up that way.

So ~6 teams will regularly go ~2-3 months without playing a home game in the middle of the season?

Does #7 then get Home field vs #3/6?

Not to mention, if you stop playing games in the summer, you give up the only time of the year where you don't have to compete with football, basketball, or hockey.

and
MLS competes already with them in spring and fall
and the league doesn't kill it with the ratings during the summer. Esp when summer tournaments doing.
Being on its current calendar isn't setting the league up for success.

Hes not a season pass holder so he probably hasn't thought that through. Timbers supporters and pass holders like myself would go bonkers if we didnt have a home match at the Prov for months.

It's not that hard - just reduce regular season fixtures by 2 and use that same period for the playoff rounds.

literally the season would still be just fall and spring
competing with the WC, Euros and Copa America is retarded.
