This stadium has a real possibility of being truly unique, cozy, and full of character due to its setting. It is literally being wedged into an urban area and built to fit into and around a unique footprint. It is eschewing all of the new stadium design rules because they simply are not feasible in this location. The team is essentially building a new modern stadium that will incorporate aspects similar to how Providence Park in Portland or Wrigley Field in Chicago were constructed around a hundred years ago. No one builds stadiums like this one. There will be nooks and crannies galore, city streets will run immediately next to the stadium on all sides, seating layout will differ greatly throughout the stadium. Some notes:

- There is a public utility easement running right through the main grandstand that required the designers to build around the right of way.

- Capacity will be at least 19,400. The goal is to raise the number to 21,000 but the designers will not be sure that they can actually reach that goal until after some construction so the final number is purposely left unanswered. They will see just how much they can fit during construction.

- To get to where these drawings are now, in the words of the design team, "... it required a design that contradicted all best practices for seat locations in typical stadium design. [in terms of premium priced seating layout]"

- "The design team devoted considerable time making what is an extremely challenging design problem seem simple...It required working from the inside out, starting with the seating bowl."

- A plaza adjacent to the stadium will offer gathering space, tailgating, food trucks, and a beer garden.

- A corner of the property will used for mixed use development that will offer a hotel, retail space, and office space. This development will commence approximately one year after the completion of the stadium.

- Bike valet at stadium.

- Drop off and pick up lines for cars will be present on the street along the west side of the stadium.

- Small green seating areas referred to as "parklets" will be present along the sides of the stadium.

- Two Metro subway stations and 4,000 parking spaces are within a few blocks of the stadium.

Looks great.

They've needed a new stadium for so long. RFK is an embarrassing stadium for the second most successful MLS team to play in.

Now we just need New England to get a soccer specific stadium.

Much better than the shite the had been trotting out a few months ago.

Still not better than the original that they wanted to build.

They should go all out for the defacto USMNT stadium.

absolutley love urban stadiums. i like that mls seems to try and make this a priority. now i just wish that they would require real grass in all new stadiums.

well done DC.

RFK Stadium is old, crumbling, ugly, isolated, and surrounded by seas of parking lots.
