Both have solid points, Lalas was right for this instance but Ballack is right for the long term

I thought the match sucked. frick pragmatism! If you are going to play that way, start Walcott, not The Ox. He's a better defender and also better on the break.
Lalas is probably right. England have no invention in their midfield. The Ox and Rooney are suited for that role, but I doubt they play it. I can certainly sympathize with Ballack's POV though. France was vulnerable and they didn't try at all, not even at the end of the match.

Lalas is spoken like a true defender, shocking I tell ya.
From a fan's perspective, the game was pretty meh, so I respect Ballack for scoffing at the style of play.
In the end, I'm glad they stuck these two clowns together in the booth, probably the most intriguing subplot thus far.

People hating on Ballak have no sense of humor. Dude is so German it's hilarious. He just says whatever he feels regardless of political correctness, and he says it in terrible english

Until they start giving trophies for style I will never understand how you can knock a team for doing what they have to do to win. Especially in a major tournament. In every other sport teams have different styles but ultimately it's all about winning but for some people this isn't the case for soccer.

I don't know how many people actually believe that, if Bradleyball gave us a better chance to win now and in the future I'd rather that over the Jurgenator, but if they both give us the same success even I'd rather us play Klinsey's way.
Also as a neutral observer, I hate when teams play like that period. just makes for terribly boring soccer.

Excellent passing and great goals is surely more exciting to watch. But to try to do something you aren't capable of and not playing to your strengths just doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure England wants to find creative midfielders who can give them chances and goals but they don't have that right now . What are they supposed to do, say screw it and start working on their style of play so they can win "the right way" in 2014 and 2016?

I think we can all agree that it's not fun to watch. That's why we aren't Stoke City fans. However, in this case, England had to get a point out of that match if they had any hopes of getting out of groups. They would have been destroyed by France if they sent out an all out attack. It's easy for us to say what we would have done with nothing on the line, but Roy has something on the line....his JOB.

You can be a good defensive team and not play eye melting, horrific football. They have enough talent to be a solid defensive team with the ability to counter. They didn't do much of that. They didn't try to do much of that.
It isn't all about winning (says the arsenal fan), especially for the neutral party. That's a large part of it for sure, but it can't be the end all when so very few win.

That's true, I mean I considered Germany in the last world cup to be a good countering team (granted I was a soccernoob then, could be off) yet they were still fun to watch.

I thought they did that a lot early.....I think they are old and got tired. Also, their best scoring threat was in the stands with his newly parted hair. I mean, if Milner scores the sitter in the first half, they may win the match. I'm sure England gives zero fricks about anything we think about their team.

Everyone (that matters) gives zero fricks about what we have to say, hence we're on message boards. 
They did well early, for sure. They sure slowed down in the second half, and it's not age when you have Welbeck, Young, Milner, Ox as your attackers, and Walcott and Defoe on your bench and you use them as like for like subs extremely late on.

Ballack has been cracking me up on tv. Lalas tries to cut him off and make him change opinions but he is just stubborn as all hell.
