Not sure what this has to do with anything. Everton is a really good side, especially considering how little money they can spend. Moyes got his side selection wrong, but there were moments of poor decision making when Everton squandered great opportunities. There was that one moment that when Pienaar tried to play in Stracqualursi instead of Anichebe, and when Felliani tried to play in Coleman instead of Stracqualursi.

What Pool should take from this is the great fluidity in their play. They were able to use the long ball, short passing, long passing, all the while using Carroll and Suarez in the same side. Gerrard was the difference in the side in many ways, but one odd thing I noticed was how deep Carroll dropped to receive the ball. It was as if Carroll was playing off Suarez. I'm not sure what to make of it.

The announcers said they have been top 8 in the league for like the past 5 or 6 years or something like that. Nothing to look down upon being in the premiership and for how little they spend.

Now thats just silly. Besides, prior today their last defeat came back in January. They've been in great form until today. And a lot of that has to do with some of the lineup selections. Like it was stated earlier, Everton's focus was on FA Cup this weekend.

Well I guess I stand corrected. But as far as I can recall, there is hardly ever any drama going down ala RVP and Krul. Every Merseyside derby I can remember has been a pretty civil affair. Hell the teams used to take the pre-match picture together.

I don't know. I've always considered it a pretty boring game.

This is how he has played in virtually every match he has played in. It is very strange, but it works. I think the club is much better with him in the lineup. He does a surprisingly good job of holding the ball up and recycles possession quite a bit. His flick-on headers create at least 1 scoring opportunity a game (the one today was saved by Timmy) and if nothing else he occupies a couple defenders on set pieces.

I can understand dropping deep, but he's 60 yards from goal. It's like he's playing as a support striker. I can understand wanting to drop deep, as you usually lose your marker, but my objection to it is that it isn't dragging any CB upfield. He's just coming upfield, receiving the ball under no pressure, and then making a sideways pass. If he does that 30 yards from goal, it's much more effective.

Carroll has always been deadly in the air, but in this game there wasn't an overt emphasis on getting balls to him in the air as I've noticed in other 'Pool games. Maybe dropping that deep is Kenny telling Carroll to get more involved in the build-up, as he seemed a lot more interested in trying to pass. The danger is that he feels comfortable coming out that far against teams who are square and compact. He won't have as much space to operate. What he needs is to work that 10 yard space between the midfield and the defense, receive the ball on the turn or half turn and play under pressure. He should get battered, fouled, kicked, everything, but this is a much easier way of him showcasing his aerial ability, as he can earn all sorts of fouls if he positions his body correctly.

A perfect example of how he should actually play is when Jozy played for Hull. Jozy suffered something like 60 plus fouls that season, but his team gained field position and set piece opportunities. Carroll has never really played like that, as he prefers to work between the CB's for heading opportunities, or stand around the box for cutbacks. Those are all fine and well, but a player of his physique would absolutely demolish teams in that 10 yard area if he just had the confidence to do it. I know it's not a matter of technique, as Kevin Davies who has average technique is superb at working that area. Drogba is player with excellent technique who is also excellent in that area. As a target-man, he shouldn't expect to contribute more than 15 goals a season, but if his link play improves between the lines, he'll be worth his price tag, in my estimation.

Whatever works. I still don't see him being effective, but whatever. It gets results.

I see Carroll progressing just fine, if it wasnt for his price tag, and he cost 15-20mm. I'll admit, I am one who would sell for a decent price... but could give him time if we brought in another proven goal scorer.

It's just for that price you want a cavani, higuain, pato or falcao... not a project.
