Because I was a Russian history major in college and have always been fascinated by Russia for some reason.
As far as racism, that's more of a national thing than just Zenit. Roberto Carlos had bananas thrown at him when he played for Anzhi, so it happens in other places too. Plus, as Zenit becomes a more European team they are distancing themselves from those idiots. They signed players like Witsel, Hulk, and Rondon and told the players on the team that didn't like it that they could take a hike. See the case of Igor Denisov.
