We can do both systems. The lack of positioning is there regardless of what system we play. Going to a back four made sense since LC weren't going forward very much.

Giroud is appreciated by most Arsenal fans, but he's maddeningly streaky. When he's on form he's the perfect target forward. But, for whatever reason he's just as likely to go scoreless in five games as he is likely to grab five goals in five games.
I love him for his skillset, but some of the criticisms labeled against him are warranted.

Arsenal was solid in the back three with Koscielny, Monreal, and a non-retarded Holding last year. Also, it was mentioned in the game thread, but Bellerin did not defend today. They may have been more solid with Ox on the right last year.

Yeah, we were playing with a back three featuring two leftbacks, and at the end our entire back four was composed of three fullbacks, and whatever the hell we call the Ox at this point.
Our back-three was done no favors by our wingbacks' awful positioning. Okazaki Vardy and Albrighton had acres of space in the channels to disrupt our backline's positioning.
