I could be wrong, but the front three of a 4-3-3, no matter the nationality, isn't necessarily all three strikers.

Mata could play out wide at the top, but not in the midfield.

Rooney-RVP-Mata, if you want to play Rooney as an attacking winger.

I would think the three in the middle would be more central, with a CAM and Carrick/Herrera. Your fullbacks would be used to provide extra width.

Your lineup has just one CM, which would take someone other than Mata. It would take a super human and wide midfielders who wouldn't play so far wide.

if he does, it'd be with carrick and herrera (or another steelier, more defensive MF) in more of a 4-2-3-1. but yes, i'd be surprised if he consistently played there. like you said, there are variations of 4-3-3, but the guy has never played anything other than CAM, RW, and LW. his skill set is not maximized by playing a deeper CM role.

the idea that he and januzaj (another purely attacking player) would play 2 of the 3 CM spots frequently is nuts. maybe LvG plans to move januzaj deeper and i missed that memo, but i thought januzaj was on the "i'm just playing on the wings until the no. 10 role opens up" development track.

that MF 3 you listed is physically weaker than any of the slender, technical MFs Arsenal rolled out these past few years (which is saying something!).

no. because busquets is a world class anchor and xavi is a world class DLP (well, any midfield role, really) who is much smarter positionally than mata or januzaj. what you're suggesting would be a barca lineup without busquets.

herrera may one day be a great DLP. i'm not sure anyone sees him as a pure DM, but maybe i'm wrong. regardless, it's a new position for him in a new league. would be madness to throw him to the dogs.

We'll see in a few weeks.

If he can convince Rooney to play in midfield, you can put him in there too.

LvG to cut ten players from the squad. It is the Mirror so it's probably as accurate as if I was the source.

The players poised to be shown the door by Van Gaal include Ashley Young, Wilfried Zaha, Marouane Fellaini, Bebe, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Nani and Nick Powell.

I'm not sure why Nick Powell is being sold, unless Wingan put in an offer for him. Admittidly I havn't kept up with him as much as the other, but I thought he was one of the promising young players.

He won Wigan's player of the year award I believe (Nick Powell). Not 100% on that though.

LvG likes to operate with a squad of 24 or 25 players and I don't mind seeing most of those players go. I like that he's coming in and getting to work.

He's the only one on the list that I question. I know this doesn't really have any impact on me, but one of the reasons why I respect Utd so much was that it kept English players in the squad. I hope LvG doesn't turn it into a foreign team like 90% of the other teams.

I am. He reminds me Ashley Young. I want him to be good, but all indications are that he is average.

Does anyone know what time LvG press conference is in CST?

As the others have said, I'm not sure he will be a "United player" based on his performances thus far. Being a young player, he still has plenty of time to grow. However, I wouldn't be terrible upset to see him go at this point.

Is anyone watching live? I'm just reading the live summary from BBC.

So far the only slightly interesting snip its:

Asked about making new signings, Van Gaal says: "First I want to see the players performing my philosophy. Then I will think about signing players."

Van Gaal is not making any rash promises. He refuses to make any predictions on what to expect at Manchester United next season.
He adds: "I will do my utmost best. That's what I can give. I cannot give predictions. You have the biggest club in the world and in two days I know how important Manchester United is.
"I'm here to prepare the team and to adapt to this team."

Van Gaal says says it could be up to four weeks before he makes a signing. "I want to look at the players here at the present. I know the players but I have not trained and coached them. It will take three or four weeks to see what they can do before we buy other players.
"Shaw and Herrera were already o the list and I approved them because I liked them."

"Nicky Butt is also assisting us. Paul Scholes we shall find a role for him and also for Phil Neville I believe. That is what we want but it has to be possible. We have to adapt to the qualities of these people. We have to speak to them."

Reporter: What would be a good season for Manchester United in 2014-15?
Van Gaal: I don't know. First I need to see how quick the players can pick up my philosophy. I haven't worked with most of them so we have to wait and see.
"It's very important there is a click between the players and the manager. For me the challenge is always first not fourth."

Van Gaal on Sir Alex Ferguson: "He called me to congratulate me and we have spoken about a cup of coffee. We know each other very well and I shall drink coffee and drink wine with him, maybe the better wine!"

Reporter: Can you fulfil expectations at Manchester United?
Van Gaal: I'm now two days here, I've met a lot of people and when you see that kind of people loving the club they expect a lot of me.
"Can I fulfil that expectation? I think I can but because of the greatness of this club it is much more difficult than in another club. This club is also guided in a commercial way and we have to fulfil that also, but it is not always possible to fulfil both."

Van Gaal: "I am not always convinced of the experience of players. I have said a lot of times in the media, Clarence Seedorf was 16 years old, I let him make his debut for Ajax. He was sometimes more experienced than a player of 30-years-old.
"It is dependent on the personality. You mentioned Wayne Rooney, but there is, for example, Michael Carrick. He is injured, that is in my opinion a big blow because he is an experienced player.
"It is very important we have experienced players, not only in age but as a human being. My philosophy is not only the football player but in total."

And with that, Louis van Gaal exits the Europa Suite and makes his way down to the pitch at a sun drenched Old Trafford to pose for photographs that will be appearing on all of Friday's back pages.

Why do people outside of England care about that so much? It's a global game. We wouldn't be fans if that wasn't the case. As long as they hit whatever quota in the FA or UEFA rules, go crazy with foreign players. It's not like England pump out the best of the best. Try to keep your academy products, I guess, but Zaha and Powell were purchases from other English clubs.

I don't know why I care. It's not just English teams, I tend to follow teams that have more local players.

ETA: Maybe it's just the idea of local players playing for the team that they grew up supporting. I know its not the case for everyone, but I like the idea.
