Not bad, but I'm predicting

-----------RVP---Rooney
Kagawa--------Mata--------Valencia
-------------Carrick
Shaw----Evans------Jones----Rafael
---------------DeGea

????

Herrera is going to play in the middle and Mata is going out wide. Giggs has already said as much. Everyone expects LvG to run his trademarked 4-3-3.

There is negative amounts of defensive cover in that formation.

There are variations of the dutch 4-3-3, it's probably going to depend on who we play.

You can line the midfield up like...

FW-------FW-------FW
-----------Mata---------
----Herrera-Carrick(or New signing)

The 4-3-3 is also supposed to turn into a 4-5-1 when you lose the ball, very similiar formations.

PTBob's response is mine. i don't doubt Herrera will play centrally, but in a 4-3-3 generally you'd have an anchor and two all around CMs that can attack and defend putting in a shift. Mata is purely an attacker. he's a poor fit in any of the midfield 3 roles (and i don't think technically any of those midfield 3 roles would be considered "going out wide." i would assume that to mean LW or RW.) januzaj isn't an CM either. that midfield would be the softest in the PL, by far. throwing herrera to the wolves of the PL in his first season by playing 5 attackers in front of him and hoping he can anchor things would be madness.

carrick is a world class anchor. i imagine he'll play there and herrera will occupy another of CM roles.

What would be sexy would be

---Januzaj----RVP-----Rooney
--------------Mata
--------Herrera---Carrick
--Shaw------------------Valencia
---------Evans------Jones
--------------DeGod

Not going to happen, but if we could get another solid holding mid that can track back and defend and allow Valencia to run foward, or get a solid CB and Jones would replace Carrick.

Serious responses only. Did you watch United play last year? Everyone was floored by Mata's willingness to track back. I agree he's an attack minded player, but he doesn't abandon his responsibilities.

You do realize that Jose got rid of him for this reason alone right? He's defensive cover leaves MUCH to be desired.

Well, this is just patently false. Also, it would be impossible to verify. I'm sure there were a whole host of reasons, I really doubt it had to do with that one purported factor.

I was going to post the same thing about Jose. Mata, for all his glory, is not valued for his defensive cover.

I agree that he's not a defensive minded player, I just don't think you can ignore the cover he provided last season. He worked his arse off on both sides of the ball.

Honestly, any and all of these lineups in LVG's system get me from 6 to 12

Could get even better if we add some defenders and another CM before the window closes.

I would feel 110% better if we could get a proven CB, another LB, and holding Midfielder.

that's as serious as it gets. if you think Mata can play CM on a consistent basis against top squads, you're the one who isn't serious. might be able to swing that versus a small side every now and then, but other than late game desperation situations, he shouldn't be played there.

not to mention, there's a difference between tracking back as an attacking midfielder and having the defensive responsibility a CM in a 4-3-3 has.

seriously, that lineup is a FIFA lineup. you're forcefricking all your best attacking players into the side.

I disagree.

Kagawa isn't on there.

So are you saying Mata won't play as a midfielder under LvG? Or that LvG won't run a 4-3-3?

Is Barca running a FIFA line up in their 4-3-3

Iniesta-------Xavi
-----Busquets----
