Worst reason to support a team ever.

quote:

No, I don't blame them at all. I readily admit I am one of them and unless you are from one of those European countries or have immediate family from there I consider you to be a bandwagon fan. If you live 3,000-5,000 miles away and only get small doses of international soccer a year it's only natural to follow a team that has players you have heard of or that you see on TV.

Am I bandwagon fan because I like Leeds?

And yes, I do like Liverpool (mostly because I like Gerrard, and Torres).

lot of the Chelsea hate is a result of Roman Abramovich's spending and what it represents in the sport today. Or at least that's why I can't stand Chelsea.

I understand this. However, Chelsea has been pretty much a non-factor in the transfer market for the last 3 or 4 years. Our last "big" signing were Ballack and Schevchenko in the summer of 06 and those were both players past their prime. I know the first 2-3 years Roman was in charge he spent huge but he was just trying to get Chelsea up to the level of the other teams that had been doing that for years. Once they got there he stopped and hasn't done it since.

I don't know are you from/or do you have close family from Leeds? I like Leeds as well. I have a student who is a huge fan so we had a double celebration Monday morning.

Do I need family not to be a bandwagon fan? That's somewhat ridiculous. When I first started watching the Premiership in the 90's, they were just the first to catch my eye. No other reason really.

I heard Terry hurt his foot looking for his Captain's armband under Bridge's bed.

I'm from a place where people think that's a stupid requirement for being a true fan.

Not necessarily family but some sort of connection to the place. I mean you may disagree but to me that is jumping on the bandwagon, and again I don't use the term negatively in this scenario. When I first started being able to really follow international soccer Essien was the player who jumped out to me and so naturally I followed him to Chelsea and started watching them. I didn't know any other Chelsea fans (all Man U, Barca, or Pool) so I jumped on the Chelsea bandwagon. As long as you don't start switching teams every other week like Stewie though it's all good. Like I said living 3,000+ miles away from the teams we root for means we pretty much all had to start somewhere. As long as you make a choice and stick to it though it's all good.

I didn't say you had to be from a place to be a true fan.

Then pick Blackburn, or Sunderland or Pompey. Not the team that spends more than the Yankees.

That team is about as anti-bandwagon as they come right now.

The "Chelsea spends a lot" is an annoying excuse to dislike them. Do you think Barca didn't spend to assemble their team? All the big teams spend, Chelsea just had the most recent EPL spending spree. Find a new excuse.

You can keep spouting off all you want about stuff you clearly are clueless about but before you continue embarassing yourself you might want to go look at what Chelsea has done in the transfer market since the summer of 06. The answer is next to nothing. Outside of Anelka all of the players on the pitch for our PL clinching win Sunday have been with Chelsea for at least 4 years. Few other teams can match that kind of consistency. Our "biggest signings" the last four years have been Anelka, Zhirkov, and Boswinga. Some big clubs do more business than that in one transfer window.

Nowhere did I say that was why I didn't like them.

I'm just commenting on the whole "whole I want to be different" line, and then picking Chelsea. Plug in Real, Barca, Manure or whoever you want.

Read things in context.
