And we don't know whether JK will do better than Bob, but with the nature of national teams it's going to be hard to make that call unless he does a lot better or a lot worse.
What we at least kind of know is that Bob seemed to have hit a bit of a wall. Nobody we can hire would be a sure thing. It would be pretty shitty to start off the JK era with the attitude that he's going to be a disappointment, no better than Bob, nothing without Loew, etc.

US Soccer prez Gulati postponed trip to Rio for WC draw. Still in California w/gen sec Dan Flynn. Klinsmann lives in Cali.

Lippi would be incredible. As would Scolari. Klinsmann's stint at Bayern just worries me. He did a great job with a German team that was truly in transition in 2006, but his relative failure at Bayern is hard to ignore. Not only that, but Joachim Low was an important part of that staff with the Germans, and his subsequent success at that level seems to lend credence to the theory that he was behind Klinsmann's success in 2006.

How would you rate Germany's talent level in 06 vs 10?

Jurgen and Jogi started a youth revolution with the German national team, an exciting brand of soccer that wasn't just the same old German way. Jogi has taken that brand to astronomical heights while in charge. Jurgen, well he flopped at Bayern.

Let's not also forget that Germany also went into the 2006 World Cup looking pretty bad in their previous games, IIRC. They really did play well, but they were playing at home.

I'd definitely say talent was better in 2010. However, there was less experience.

Yeah, but he's gone on to other successes since then.

I'm not commenting on Low, but I don't have to tell you some of those players are awesome. He has to bring them all together, but still, he's got some great material to work with.
If JK can do a good job mixing youth and experience and just improve a bit on BB's gameday coaching, I'll be happy with him. Nobody we hire is going to do spectacularly, b/c we just don't have the players.

I'm going to be optimistic about Jurgen. I really am. Get ready to see some young players.

That was why the Germans had low expectations for the cup. Klinsmann exceeded those expectations, so was looked upon favorably.
The reality was that Germany had lots of young players and it was very difficult to predict how they would do. Schweinsteiger and Lahm did extremely well. But at that point they had 20 plus caps, along with Mertesacker. Most of the young players that went to the WC with Germany had plenty of caps before then, the biggest exception being Odonkor.

Well what's done is done. Bradley can come in and try to save us if we start playing poorly.

I think the value that Klinsmann would bring above any others is raising the publicity of US Soccer, both here and abroad.

I should have finished my point, which is that pre-WC form is a terrible indicator of success at the WC. It would have been literally unthinkable for Germany not to progress past the group stage. And to be honest, the Germans changed some things in their youth system at the end of the 90's, and by 2006, were reaping the rewards. Klinsmann gets credit for introducing youth, but it goes much deeper than that. This article points out the youth movement started much earlier in Germany, and 2006 was the moment it started reaping benefits. LINK
The German media probably overreacted to Germany's pre-WC form, which was exceeded by the German team not without some effort, and which made Klinsmann into something of a hero by the same media.

And let's not forget they were in the Final in 2002.
Germany is Germany. Chances are, they're going to be in the semifinals.
