Is there a particular reason why little kids are trotted out before games?

Not being an arse. I'm just wondering is there any significance to the kids being walked out onto the field before the games? It seems like a nice gesture.
But is there any particular reason or significance to holding their hands and walking them out on the field before the game? I can't imagine that being done in American football.
Is it only done for friendlies and World Cup games? Or is it done in the Premier League as well?
Is it just a soccer tradition? How do they pick the kids?

And it's everywhere, not just the Cup. Normally you can just sign up. Sometimes it's for charity, etc.
Kids also normally get to attend practices and get a tour of the stadium for doing it.

Interesting culture contrast.
Soccer matches the teams emerge walking from one tunnel in the middle of the sideline. Pageantry includes official flags, children and handshakes.
Football team run out onto the field from opposite end sides. Pageantry includes massive running flags, marching bands and captains shaking hands a midfield.

There's also the rumor that the kid mascot tradition originated to prevent opposing players from fighting in the tunnel, as players would be less likely to sucker punch someone else with a kid watching.

I figured it would prevent fans from throwing batteries, but it is so much more common in international soccer rather than club, where fans are better behaved.
