re: In terms of this World Cup, I don't think we are THAT far off

That is what I said. I think we could doing well in Group H. We could potentially qualify in any group, but it would be hard to win many. I think Group H and surprisingly Group D (only because Costa Rica won) are the most winnable groups. Hopefully, we win Group G, so we can add to that hypothetical.
Five of the groups have a team that definitely look way better than us (and not even counting our Group G where Germany looks better).

I'm going to steal a page from the Book of Lalas and speak in generalities and vagueness. Every team has an identity of some sort, and I think Jurgen has embraced what the US is about: bravado, strength, and resilience. It shows on the pitch and we just have to stay true to it.

What's with the Jurgen hate? Inside joke or sarcasm?

I can't help but wonder how we would do in each group.
A- same as Mexico. Ghana> Cameroon and Portugal> Croatia.
B- yikes. Due to the pots drawn from I think Australia is the team we would replace. We would put up a damn good fight and have a chance buts its the only as bad as the one we got. Chile, Spain, and Netherlands with USA would be the ultimate group of death.
C- at least 2nd. Im not sure how we would matchup with Columbia.
D- looks brutal on paper but Costa Rica won it. They finished 2nd to us in qualifying and are realistically the 3rd best team in CONCACAF.
E- 1st or 2nd depending on a game with France.
F- no worse than 2nd. Its weak after Argentina.
G- First I hope. I would take 2nd. That motherfrickin Portugal goal.
H- 1 or 2 with Belgium.
I love how its getting to the point it doesnt matter who we get in group we have a chance of advancement.

That's his identity, though. He was like that as well, as a player. Maybe not with bravado, he wasn't too cocky, but he was self-assured. It's why he's become, more-or-less an American, living in the States, raising his kids in the States and now the manager. He's a good fit, especially for this group of players he's chosen. They reflect his character.

I really hope we can sneak a W tomorrow. The Belgian team has its deficiencies but they are so loaded with talent. I'd rather watch them Germans and them beat on each other and us play Group H's runner up.

Argentina defeated Nigeria 3:2. The same Nigeria that we dismantled 2:0 prior to a late penalty when all the subs (ahem, omar, ahem) were in.
Argentina struggled with Iran.
Messi is outstanding, but to say that we couldn't compete with Argentina right now ignores what has happened in the last month in soccer.
