rio ferdinand tweeted that if you see him stretchered off and run back on, that is the green light to give him a two footed tackle. Maybe someone should give alves a nice two footer on the return leg?

This could be stopped if they fined players when it was clearly shown they were acting in order to fool the ref. It wouldn't be that hard to do. The NFL fines people for in game offenses post game, I don't see why these leagues can't do the same.

I agree completely although was an international match under UEFA instead of a domestic league and I don't think they have any authority to levy fines like La Liga, the EPL or Serie A would if this happened in actual league match?

Suspensions would certainly be possible though since they already do this post game for things like punches etc.

All these type theatrics seem to happen a lot more in UEFA CL and WC than in any regular league matches I watch too.

I am sure he is. The FA had to give him a 2 match ban for his swearing because of all the outcry from the elbow.

I like Gerrard fine as a player and he is NOWHERE NEAR the worst type but he certainly dives on occasion.

Unfortunately his reputation outside of England is very much as a diver which is unfair but understandable since his most infamous dive was in the CL final against AC Milan where he won a decisive penalty on what to all but Liverpool and extreme EPL fans was pretty clearly a dive.

Probably the only reason I've noticed so many of his dives was the explosion of blogposts with youtube videos of them right after he spoke out against diving with so many fans recalling this and then, I guess, finding more.

However, in Gerrard's defense, this whole notion that American or English or German players don't dive is bullshite. I don't think they do it nearly as much on average but they do it.

Fortunately they seldom play act like Busquets or Alves which may not be worse than a dive in the area for a PK but is sure more tedious to watch.

Hell, my favorite ever is Dempsey and I'll be the first to admit that he's certainly taken a dive here and there.

Yeah I know of the play. The difference is that was one play and he was being clearly held on a goal scoring chance. He should've been yellowed for it but it would have been a PK regardless of him going down or not.

I just used that CL example because it's so famous and probably the beginning of the backlash against him.

Again I'm not picking on Gerrard because I have no problem with him but I do recall all the video posted everywhere when he criticized Ronaldo I think it was. Modest indeed by CR7 standards but they did reveal Gerrard to have a decent collection of dives himself -- most of the sticking a foot out to intentionally trip yourself then going down variety though he can mix in a good ol' wild arms flailing head to the sky when only barely nudged in the back if he has too.

Ah alright, gotcha. Yeah he's old as shite now anyway. I guess when your bones are that brittle you need to do whatever you can to keep your competitive edge.

he also leads with his elbows whenever he leaves the ground. he has probably elbowed half of the premier league by now

my favorite:

never a more deserving victim

Yeah, for me he's certainly not gonna win any diving competitions with the players he criticized but probably would've been a little smarter to not get on a soapbox that caused so many people to dig out all the skeletons in his closet.

I tend to agree that the CL dive against AC MIlan as probably more clever gamesmanship than anything since Gattuso did appear to at least try to grab him. In fact I was recalling Gerrard against AC when thinking Robben should've gone down the same way when Puyols fouled him on that break away in the Cup this summer.

I don't think going down as a result of significant contact is diving. I think that's just smart play. As long as you're sure the player legitimately fouled you and you aren't doing it in bad faith to fish for a free kick that was undeserved. I mean, when I play I try as hard as I can to stay on my feet and its fricked my team over many times because the ref allowed play to go on instead of award a free kick 20 yards out.

When someone taps your chest with their finger as it brushes by and you grab your face like it got hit with a baseball bat that's different though.

To my eye it seems Gerrard against AC was a generous side of legit but with a main course of fish. As they say, he "made a meal of it" but I totally agree that all the face holding is just an entirely different thing. .

Haha well we can agree to disagree I guess. Maybe it's the homer coming out of me.

Dempsey grew up with Mexicans so it's not entirely his fault.

Probably preferable to stabbing each other at the Liverpool v AS Roma friendly that may be happening this summer like both of our hooligans seem to enjoy so much.
