I know, I know.

"Never gonna happen"

regardless, I'm bored.

Since there are less than 20 teams in the MLS and only 8 in the NASL (US Soccer 2nd tier). I'm going to set the promotion relegation limit to 2 teams.

To make things more interesting though, lets say the 16th and 17th placed teams in the MLS battle it out in a relegation playoff while the 2nd and 3rd placed teams in NASL do the same for a promotion.

2011 MLS Final Standings(Team/points/goal differential)
1. LA Galaxy 67 +20 -- MLS Champion
2. Seattle Sounders 63 +19
3. Real Salt Lake 53 +8

5. Sporting KC 51 +10
6. Houston Dynamo 49 +4

15. Chivas USA 36 -2
16. Toronto FC 33 -23 -- Relegation Playoff
17. New England Revolution 28 -20 -- Relegation Playoff
18. Vancouver Whitecaps 28 -20 -- Relegated

2011 NASL Final Standings

You're saying we could get rid of the Canadians?

Yes. Let's just promote and relegate four teams a piece.

Someone's not impressed with TFC's big 2-0 win last night.

Plus, when I think league-wide joke, I think of the last-place Portland Timbers. At least TFC was in the Champions League and TFC is actually in the finals of a tournament.

In league play, TFC is ridiculous. Portland gets a pass because they're only in their second year.

And I'm sure TFC fans would trade some stinking Canadian title for relevancy in their own league.

Boooooo!!!

You're letting your rationality get in the way of your SSFC fandom/Timbers hatred.

I think it should be incorporated over time. Would increase hype and talent

I foresee a soccer future where promotion/relegation is phased out instead of phased in over time.

I love it personally. I can see how it would be not an American thing though.

Yeah, I like it, too, but my soccer crystal ball does not always show me things that I like.

Although it is definitely showing a Spurs 3rd place finish this Sunday!

This is why no one voted for you in the popularity contest threads.

I'm not very well versed in the NASL, so someone tell me how good/bad are their teams? Would they be able to compete low to mid table first year up similar to how other promoted teams are?

None of them would survive relegation the next season without fantastic team chemistry (RSL, Swansea) or significant investment in the playing staff.

Yeah that's kind of what I figured, would be cool but seems fantastical at this point. Probably have to restructure the league(s) to implement something like this
