How much better of a player Landon Donovan would be if he had not stayed in MLS

The guy was named best young player of the world cup in 02, did he waste his talent and potential by staying in the MLS?

Where do you think he would've been if he wasn't in MLS? Everton always teased signing him.

Was, or is? I think his time at Everton has shown that he can compete with the big boys. I think he would have been better if he had toughed it out in Europe, but he liked LA and MLS needed its poster child, so there is a lot to be said for that.

hard to say. granted he never parlayed "best young player" into "best player," it's quite a stretch to say he flopped (not that you were implying that) in any way shape or form. i think his success in stints with everton prove that his development was sufficient.

Donovan finally reached a maturity level required for European play at 28. His earlier stints at Leverkusen and Munich were largely abject failures. This is around the time he first went on loan at Everton and proved that he could play at the highest level. He shushed much of the criticism and his own self-doubt surrounding his career arc.
He would have been a productive player in England had he signed with Everton, but wouldn't have improved much technically after 28.

Unfortunately that means he probably won't be playing against Mexico in the Azteca, but should be back and fit for our June qualifiers.

He easily had about 5 years where he could've started with Everton.. so I'd say he could've lasted on a lower EPL team for about 10.

He actually did well when he played, he just didn't get on the field enough.
