My point is there will always be a place for the shorter guys. They are just more apt to be more technically gifted due to simple physics. They won't be replaced by bigger/stronger/faster players because those bigger/faster/stronger players bring something entirely different to the table. It is no surprise that of the players I listed, the shorter they are/were the more technical their game is/was.

Eta: my favorite player of all time is Brazilian Ronaldo because he had the perfect combo of freak genetics/athletic ability, technical proficiency, and grace. That being said, he was never the most technically proficient player on the pitch.

Exactly my point. And I'm not trying to say that shorter players will ever be completely eradicated. But when you get those rare athletes(Ronaldo/AROD/Lebron/Peyton Manning) who can combine the skill that a smaller guy needs with their size/athleticism as a luxury, they are even better.

True. But he never could have played CM. That's my point.

D-backs , wide receivers and 1/2 guards would be the positions that would translate athletically the best.
A defensive 4 loaded with NFL safety's would have to be pretty awesome, right?

I can't help but think the honey badger would be awesome.

Maybe. Maybe not. Having a bigger player pool certainly couldn't hurt. All the athleticism in the world won't help you if you don't have the technical ability.

Its not like our best athletes are all 6'8"

Allen Iverson was a multi-sport freak of nature.

Steve Smith (short ex-Panther)

Dexter McCluster

etc.

These guys have insane quickness, speed, agility, coordination, and balance. If they had been put in soccer academies in 1st grade like those Euro and South American players, they'd be superstars.

But this topic is tired. It won't happen in our lifetimes. Our best talent comes from inner cities and the soccer pitch isn't replacing the basketball court anytime soon in those areas.

A lot of these guys are different types of athletes than what you want in soccer. Soccer is an endurance-based sport.

Right. But the guy was talking about size specifically and soccer players getting taller/bigger.

But yea, this topic is beat to death.

I don't want to get into this argument. Hopefully crazy4lsu comes by and posts the Dutch study about soccer players being a lot of slow-twitch fiber guys.

Yes and no. I can't remember the details, but the Dutch did a study and found that people with predominantly fast twitch muscle fibers were injured much, much more often than players with predominantly slow twitch or a 50/50 ratio of both types.

eta: I see VKC beat me to it.

Pretty awesome. In the air, probably not. Bringing the ball out, probably not.

ok.... for this to happen you'd basically have to have American Football never exists.

Imagine you wake up tomorrow, everything's the same, but futbol is in place of football. All the names are the same, heck the players and coaches are the same. Nick Saban, Johnny Football, Ohio State, Texas, The Cowboys, Troy Polumalu, the Super Bowl... everyone. But instead, it's soccer (obviously everyone has different physiques as stuff, honing soccer bodies since age 5).

Since no other sport called football exists besides the Canadian and Australian kind, we'd still call it 'football' so there'd still be the "NFL" and "College Football" and just like those sports, we'd have basically the best athletes in the world. Young talent all over the world from Brazil, England, Argentina and Italy are all competing with Americans to win scholarships to the big time football schools like LSU, USC, Oklahoma and Notre Dame. All hoping to join America's premier league of the NFL.

Failure to be drafted means heading home to clubs that are kinds of good but really exist so NFL teams occasionally fish from your talent. Some of the more prominent ones are Barcelona, Manchester United and AC Milan.

Every 4 years the USA runs wild over the competition and anything less than a finals appearance results in a coaching change... like that one time plucky Brazil won it all in a huge upset.

Is this the world you want?

Russ Westbrook and John Wall would be good... them dudes are fast and agile. Would think those are the types that translate best.

Could we upgrade over Timmy Howard as the keeper is a doozy to ponder.

The decline of american football and people not wanting their kids to play football will most likely help soccer out especially now that its getting more recognition by the general public.

IE the kids who dont want to do basketball and can't do football anymore. They aren't going to baseball or hockey. Soccer is really the only other option. or maybe this is more of a wish
