Had an argument with a friend who said Cech was not a top-10 GK in the world.

While I am biased to Chelsea, I had to disagree.

But wanted to see how most people rank the best keepers. I imagine the top 10 list, in some order consists of:

Cech
Casillas
Hart
Caesar
Reina
Buffon
Neuer
Lloris
Howard?
Valdes?

4. Buffon
5. Lloris

Or something like that.

I don't like to try to rank them.. I think it'd be easier and more valuable to put them into tiers.

Elite, almost elite, pretty damn good, above average, etc.

4. Cech
5. Lloris

Buffon, Valdes, Handanovic are all probably top 10

I think there are lots of GKs the next level down though such as Howard, Stekelenberg, Reina, Friedel, Abiatti, Cesar, Adler

Valdes is not in the top 10. I don't think he's nearly as good as Tim Howard

Tiers are definitely a better system. I think its OK to rank them based on a combination of current form and consistency though.

I think that the top 5 list changes pretty much every season though, for instance a few years ago when Inter was playing so well I thought Cesar was a for sure top 3 but injuries and inconsistency have really caused a drop in his form over the last few seasons.

As far as being a pure goalkeeper I completely agree, I don't think Valdes is very good.

He's been a vital part in the best team in the world over the last 4 or so years. I don't think there's another keeper in the world who could play his sweeper-keeper position behind Barcas high defensive line as effectively as he has (other than the occasional gaffe of course)

I'd have Buffon up there just because I like his name.. It makes me chuckle when I see it.

I wouldn't trust your friend's word on anything else soccer related. Cech is top 3.
