Ramsey, Ozil, Wilshere, Diaby (lol like he'd ever be healthy), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Rosicky is not exactly a scrub lineup of midfielders. The problem was lack of depth in wide attacking players like Walcott and Podolski which meant Ozil and others had to play wider roles than they normally do. I also wouldn't classify Giroud as "average" at all. He's not flashy, but he scores goals at a pretty good clip. The problem was that we didn't have a good 2nd choice behind him which meant he was spent by season's end.

I didn't say their midfield players were bad. I said they lacked depth in the midfield, which you just agreed with. I think Giroud is a fine player, don't think he's great.

The problem with Arsene being so frugal is that Arsenal is in too many competitions to not have solid depth. Every year Arsenal loses a player due to injury and they can't replace him and every year they fail to get proper depth.

Walcott, Ramsey and Ozil's injuries crushed Arsenal. Once Ramsey and Ozil got back Arsenal were a very good squad. We need cover for Giroud(or better) a CDM and RB. Oh and trainers that practice 21st century techniques.

That 7 deep midfield seems rather deep to me. Granted, I've always viewed the wide players as more wingers than wide midfielders (see usage of guys like Walcott and Podolski), so that could be the basis of our disagreement on what constitutes midfield depth.

I do agree on Wenger's spending. Hopefully with stadium paid off and a new shirt deal, he'll splash some out to plug the holes.
