FIFA has proposed allowing teams to make up to five substitutions per match to help players cope with the return to action after the coronavirus pandemic.
Teams will be afforded only three slots - plus the half-time break - during the match to make their changes, in a bid to avoid unnecessary stoppages.

If approved, FIFA's proposals would also cover the 2020/21 season, as well as the current campaign.
They would also apply to all international matches until the end of next year - including Euro 2020, which has been postponed until June 2021.

quote:I don't see how this is any different from the current rules. I think it's saying you can stop the game to make a sub only 3 times. If a keeper gets hurt and you have only made 2 subs during play and have at least one of your 5 subs remaining, then you can immediately sub on a new keeper.
The idea is nice, but I dont like this.
If a keeper gets hurt/sent off and you can't immediately get a sub on then that's just dumb.

You're correct.
I read it as there will be three preselected times throughout the match at which you will be allowed to make a sub.

My first impression was “wtf hell no” but looking at the goal of this (decreasing overuse injuries) and the fact it will be temporary I don’t think it’s a bad idea. The majority of soccer injuries are from overuse imo. If you have these teams playing matches every two or three days then the players, especially the starters, are going to be at serious risk of injury unless coaches heavily rotate (which some don’t) or have the ability to manage minutes better during the game.
CSB warning. Feel free to skip.
As a fun aside, I’m currently in training to be a sports medicine doctor. On a recent zoom call there happened to be the head doctor for the Scottish National team. He basically said that Mourinho doesn’t believe in injury prevention methods and fights his doctors about it. So his teams don’t do prehab or specific regimens that have been proven to reduce injuries. When he was at Chelsea this issue caused the head doctor to quit, and he ultimately moved to..... Tottenham. And then Mourinho ended up at Tottenham too and now this doc had to stop his injury prevention programs again

It’s ok, he’s “special.”
I like this idea, though I wonder if they are going to also allow an extra two spots on the bench? That way theoretically you could still have a full compliment of players (gk, def, mid, fwd) available for your 5th sub. I see it being a great way to give garbage time minutes to younger players as well.

What the hell has he been making Erik Lamela do for the past 5 years then?

For competitions which have either started or are intended to start, but are scheduled to be completed by 31 December 2020, the IFAB has approved FIFA’s proposal to introduce a temporary amendment to Law 3 – The Players, which will allow for a maximum of five substitutes to be made per team. However, to avoid disruption to the game, each team will only have three opportunities to make substitutions; substitutions may also be made at half-time.

I wonder if teams will be more willing to yank their GK at half time now if he's stinks it up in the first half. It's not in the spirit of the rule, but we all know they'll use the extra subs to their advantage.

Dude, we saw several teams in the EPL change keepers throughout this season alone.

Assuming Transfermarkt is correct, the only times I can find where an EPL team changed keepers during a league game where when a GK was injured or got a red card. I couldn't find any subs because the GK wasn't playing well (unless you consider getting a red card to be not playing well).

I wasn't referring to in game on the last post, I meant throughout the season (West Ham is first to come to mind). But with 2 extra subs it's not out of the realm of doing it in game now, ala hockey.

Line changes, now that’s an interesting idea!
