I thought the host team was drawn into 1A because that team always kicked off first. Apparently not And they had 12 years to plan this

Absolute State

quote:

The 2022 World Cup will reportedly now start one day earlier than originally planned, with Qatar vs Ecuador set to be the opening game of the tournament. Subject to final confirmation, that match will take place on Sunday 20 November, having previously been scheduled for Monday 21 November.

quote:

England's Group B campaign was set to kick off on the original opening day of the tournament, Monday 21 November, with proceedings against Iran kicking off at 1pm GMT (8am ET).

It is not believed that moving the Qatar vs Ecuador game will change this. Three matches rather than four will be played on November 21 should the new plans be finalised.

The same applies to United States' first game against Wales, which gets going at 7pm GMT (2pm ET).

As long as the England match is still scheduled for the Friday after thanksgiving I’m good. That could be an epic 3 day stretch, but don’t want it falling on Thursday or Saturday

Yeah, the changes are very minimal. I’m surprised they weren’t incorporated from the start but it pretty much changes nothing except for fans of Ecuador and Qatar

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the schedule done way in advance and when the teams are drawn into pots and positions (1A, 3C, etc) that's when you know who is actually playing in those games? And isn't the host nation always 1A?

All that say, how the frick did nobody notice that 1A wasn't playing in the first game?

Yes, I think you’re right and am wondering the same thing.
