I was pissed and did not agree with what the FO did. The South needs a MLS and hopefully ATL with Blank can get it done. So in the meantime I support my "local" team.
Blank can do it. God knows that the Silverbacks won't make the "jump" like Seattle or Portland did.

Me too. Best of luck Waldo! Hoping to see him back in mls in the next few years.

ATL sucks for sports teams. A MLS club would do better elsewhere. I honestly, think the Railhawks would have a stronger following than in ATL.

Why do you think this? I can not disagree more. The Braves have a huge following, as do the Falcons. The Hawks have a following when they are good. With such a HUGE latino population and the amount of people who like soccer in the state it makes sense we would finally get a team.

Enough internationals, queers, and suburban soccer families to pack the seats in ATL.

Really? I'm a Braves fan. But, come on.....
The hawks have an AWFUL following and their stadium is relatively new. Young roster, playoff potential and still have a hard time selling out.
Hows your hockey team ?
Braves do have a big following but they are middle of the pack too when it comes to attendance numbers.
Falcons are middle of the pack when it comes to attendance and football is STRONGER in the south, than anywhere else in the country.

was the hockey team ever good? From what I remember, and I'll admit I didn't follow hockey much but they were below avg. most years.
ok so what you're telling me is Braves and Falcons have a good following and that's 2/3 of the big pro sports teams.

Being mediocre to bad in average....losing a franchise isn't a good thing. Bandwagon fans doesn't help either. Braves have had a hard time selling out NLDS games. If I recall correctly.

It's a hockey team that moved from the South to Canada. You can't really help that.

It keeps the numbers up. I do agree fans in ATL. don't seem to be that loyal when the teams are bad.

I would find that very hard to believe. Every time I've ever been to a game it's packed.

According to a slam piece by the piece of shite, Rob Parker from ESPN:
quote:
Of course, there are some true-blue Atlanta sports fans. But in the 25 years I have covered sports in that town, attendance has always been an issue. Despite winning 14 straight division titles, the Braves only led the league in attendance once. In Game 4 in the 2010 NLDS, there were 6,000 empty seats. In the 2005 NLDS, there were 10,000 empty seats in Game 1 and 4,000 empties in Game 2. In the 2004 NLDS, there were 9,000 empty seats for Game 1 and 10,000 empties for Game 2. Last season, the Hawks ranked 22nd in attendance in the NBA.

You serious dude? You must have gone to a game where they played the Red Sox, Yankees, or Cubs. Although I was at the Cubs game tonight and I really think we were 3 of like 7 people in our entire section.
I love ATL but arguing that Atlanta is a good pro sports town is like arguing the the MLS is a really good soccer league.

You just had to squeeze that in there, didn't you?

Just trying to keep it soccer related and it's actually a really good comparison.

I will also attest to Atlanta sucking as a sports town having lived there for five years. The problem is that too many of the fans live in the outlying counties and refuse to come into the city for games. The Falcons have drawn well since 2002, but the other teams have always struggled.

Only in Atlanta would it happen twice. Go Flames go!
Come to think of it, the Flames would be a great team for the soccer board to support...

Atlanta fans are not consistent at all but I do think an MLS team would do extremely well. worldfootball.net (not sure if credible) said 2011 average MLS attendance was 17,869. If that is close to true Atlanta could easily meet that average and probably exceed. As it was previously mentioned, I think the growing latino population would buy up a lot of tickets.
I went to Manchester City/Club America in the Dome a couple of summers ago and I bet there were 20k at that exhibition.

I'd be the first one there.

The problem is finding the right place to put the stadium. I know Arthur Blank was looking at the old Chevy assembly plant in Doraville as a possible location for a new Falcons stadium. As misguided as that idea is, I think the location would be perfect for a 25,000 seat MLS stadium.
