or Seattle with fan support?

They’ve sold 18k season tickets as of December 4th so it seems to me that they have a very real possibility of selling out the 40k seat Nippert Stadium (Wikipedia says 36k capacity for soccer) next year.

If so, how big of a soccer-specific stadium should they build? Is 25k too small?

Fan support, probably.

MLS has done well picking expansion spots for fan interest, excepting Austin

I think 25-30k is about right. Plus you can get a really tight, well knit ground at that size (Take Selhurst Park or Craven Cottage for example)
But then again, I do believe Cincy has an established fanbase so maybe a tad more would do.

Hell, Bournemouth in the Premier League only has a 12k capacity stadium...

You don’t think Austin will do well either?

I think that they’d need to build a stadium with a retractable roof to handle the central Texas summer heat.

Traffic is also awful in Austin and they have no reliable public transit. I think it’s going to be a failure unless the ownership is willing to dump NFL-type money into the venture, which they won’t.

It’s a tough balance to strike between supply/demand. You can create artificial scarcity by limiting ticket availability but if you create too much scarcity you’ll miss out on ticket revenue.

I imagine Portland wishes their 9k person season-ticket waitlist had been translated into 7 or 8k revenue-generating seats instead. Even at a slightly lower price.

Cincy is a great choice for an MLS franchise. I still hate the try-hard "Real" or "FC" though. So damn lame.

That's a really good point.
I just cringe at all the college football programs who built these huge stadiums, and can no longer fill them out (especially with the FCS and lower P5 schools). It's just an eyesore and kills atmosphere.

Agreed. A full 20k seat stadium will help you sell tickets better than a 50k seat stadium with 25k empty seats anyday.

Ideally there’s 1-2k fans who can’t get tickets for your least attractive games and more fans who can’t for your sexier matches.

Seattle, Vancouver, and Atlanta all have the advantage of being able to manipulate scarcity with their stadiums by opening up the full stadium only for marquee games.

I don’t get why ‘FC’ is included in here. I will say that Real or Sporting is pretty gay, but I have no problem with FC.

How about FC Montreal and Stade Olympique, mate?

SKC at least had plans to start other programs under that name (lacrosse, etc) but I don't know how far they got with that.

They are building roughly a 25k seat stadium. I think that will be enough until they show they can support a much larger stadium.

Would selling out every match in a 36k seat stadium satisfy that requirement?

It's a good start. I'm not sure if season ticket applications would be a better metric or not. However, nothing bad about being a slightly bigger LAFC. They had great support from what I could tell, and they opened with a 22k seat stadium.

Which makes it the league standard of course.

I think they should probably hold more 70k capacity matches next season. Certainly for the opener, derby matches, and the odd Saturday against a big market team. Maybe open it up for 7 or 8 regular season matches instead of 3 or 4.

If Jorge Mas is able to execute his full vision for Inter Miami, meaning 100% approval for all his development plans for the property, I think they will be the next “superclub” in MLS. They will have the money and appeal to sign players most MLS teams couldn’t dream of. I can even see Ronaldo retiring there if they join the league in time. Griezemann has also specifically mentioned interest in playing there.

I like Cincinnati will be like Portland and Kansas City. A smaller market that absolutely loves its team and packs the stadium to the rafters. St. Louis also seems likely to join the league in the near future, and they fit that mold, too.

I don’t imagine you’ll see CR7 in the United States anytime soon with the whole rape thing.

But yeah, Miami should have no time attracting great players, attracting the fans will be the tougher sell.

They are. They already announced that they will open the full stadium for at least 6 matches in 2019, and they could easily add more as the season progresses. I think they opened it for 5 regular season matches this year, but they originally scheduled only 3 or 4. They added one or two as the season went on.
