not really b/c they where completely dominated

I wouldn't call domination getting beaten time and again by a SPL goal keeper. Domination would be 5-0 at half.

Agreed, but in reality, Celtic got 0 points and that's disappointing.

I know, but the tactics were correct. My point is that playing the way Celtic and Barca did does not mean anything. The result (the whole reason they were playing that way) is more important, so using that argument is pointless.

Whole lot of Brazilians in that Shaktar team, they'd have to frick up royally not to advance to the next round

Or just lose to Chelsea and Juve in their next matches which is entirely possible if not probable.

This may blow your mind but the object is to score goals, not possess the ball more.

You conveniently ignored the stat that disproves your point yet again.

10 shots on goal compared to 1.

Can't score more than the other team (2) with only one shot on frame.

the first half?

Celtic came out with the plan of using Sammy and Brown as the intermediaries between the back and Hooper. Sammy got hurt (bringing on Forrest, who, while very good, is young and short, reasons why Alba scored) and Brown has been playing without a hip for over a month. Brown probably won't play again until after Christmas, if that.

With those two off the park, Celtic was forced to drop back.

I know we didn't get anything from this, but the match showed that Celtic FC isn't the bottom dweller that people on here and abroad think. Lennon has taken the club from a squad that couldn't do a thing away in Europe to a team with international quality players. He's even made Samaras useful. From here, we're set up quite well to be in Europe after Christmas and we're in with a shout of the next stage of the UCL.

You are the only poster who thinks Celtic didn't park the bus. Fwiw I don't blame them. It's the only chance they had.

Chelsea scored 3 with 3 shots on target in the two legs against Barca last year. The point is that, save a very lucky goal by Barca, Celtic did everything correct even though they had just one shot on goal. I know, I know, I'm not trying to take that goal away from Barcelona. But, they played about as well as a lesser team can against the best squad in the world.

I mean, Celtic scored on an own goal..

Like I said, they neither deserved points nor were they unlucky not to get points. The better team dominated the match and came out on top. A fair result if you ask me.

Absolutely. I just take issue with arguing that because you fill a stat sheet with 10 more shots than the other team, that doesn't entitle you to win a game. Shots don't mean anything, goals win you games. That means if you have to bunker with 10 men in the defensive third, so be it.

The better team won, but not because they took a million shots. They were better because they scored 2 goals. That's it.

Exhibit A:

Yea, I disagree. The scoreline doesn't always do the match justice. Swap Barcelona with Liverpool and Celtic with Stoke and you know you wouldn't think Stoke deserved any points.

How many times has Liverpool been the better team the past 2 seasons and still not gotten points? In all of those cases, Liverpool deserved the points but didn't get them. They were the better team in every aspect of the match, they just didn't win the scoreline.

I agree. Still sad about it, though.

I hate bunkering, but it's a necessity with who we had available. It's much more understandable to bunker as a Celtic or a Shaktar than as a Chelsea, though.

No doubt. Losing the match in stoppage time is never how you want to lose. If Celtic would have won 1-0 it would have been an unfair result because Barcelona deserved to win the match. But the club (Celtic), and its supporters, wouldn't have cared because they got the points (and rightly so).

I'm just remembering back to the semis and the Chelsea fans on here saying that only a team of Chelsea's caliber could have done that. So, either they were wrong then or Celtic belongs at the European table.

I think there's some confusion. In this situation, I'm just saying, that stats don't matter if you can't score. Stats don't get you 3 points. They make you feel good and make us believe Brendan is moving in the right direction, and that's fine for where Liverpool are right now. We need that. The fans need that.

Barcelona aren't in the same boat. To substitute one club for the other isn't fair. In the microcosm of this one game, in this one tournament, Celtic did what they had to do and came up just slightly short. Just because Barcelona shot a good bit doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things for where that club is right now. There are no moral victories for them, and their fans will be asking questions of the game, as they should. Liverpool aren't as blessed, so I see a difference.
