You don't need a midfield destroyer when you are playing three at the back though. I'd also argue that if Nainggolan was playing Witsel's role, he'd play it better. KDB had more tackles than Witsel.

Nainggolan gets forward far too much to even play with someone like De Bruyne.
If you’ve watched Radja play the last couple of years, he has turned into someone who gets caught out of defense constantly.
I’m not saying Witsel is good, but he is familiar with the team and the players like him so I see why the decision was made.

I think with a 3 at the back system you can afford to go with a more attack-minded midfield. Belgium was pinned back on the wings, and Witsel wasn't providing the correct sort of outlet, nor was he doing a very good job picking up Kagawa. I think playing a 3 at the back system and a destroyer is redundant and leaves you outnumbered in key areas when the ball is in transition.

What a way to lose. That games last 30 was amazing.

quote:
think their height and luck was the difference and going for it is one thing. Going all in on a corner with 30 seconds left and everyone on your team is 6 inches shorter than their marker probably wasn't the best idea.
pretty much sums the game up:
Belgium's immense height and muscle advantage finally overcome a brilliant Japanese effort as well as Roberto Martinez's horrid tactics.
