I would be ok wirh the CAF being thought of as the 3rd best. I wouldn't agree but I could except that logic since there isn't a whole lot separating the other confederations after Europe and South America. The qualifying spots are indefensible.

Host- 1 auto spot leaving 31.

Europe- 13. 9 automatic and 8 second place teams compete for four wildcards.

Africa- 5 automatic. Not 1 person can logically explain why.

South America- 4.5, thats right less than Africa.

Asia- 4.5, the same as South America.

North America- 3.5, should be the same or more than Africa and Asia.

Oceania- 0.5, should be consolidated with Asia or have all island nations compete in Oceania. Australia and Japan as 2 examples.

I would not move too much, but I think one African and Asian spot should be moved to Europe and South America.

Australia used to be in the OFC, but it's easier to come in the top four of a confederation where your biggest competition is Japan and South Korea instead of hoping you don't slip against New Zealand.

Australia is its own continent. Why would it be considered Asian?

This brings me to the point of making this post: Should CONCACAF be awarded 4 spots, with Asia losing their 0.5 extra? Should Africa's allocated spots be changed? The only problem I see with giving CONCACAF 4 guaranteed spots is that there is a significant drop off after Mexico, CR, and the US. That said, it's pretty obvious that Asia doesn't deserve 4.5 spots.

Hard to justify because those confederations have so many countries. You have to think in terms of proportions. How many countries qualify out of the total number who play?

And if we are going to cut spots from anyone, let it be Europe. They underperformed this world cup, too. Why do they get 13 teams when only 6 made the second round (two of which - Switzerland and Greece - will be promptly eliminated)?

Take from Europe, give to CONCACAF. That's my vote.

There is no perfect way to do it but I feel it needs to be adjusted.

I would drop Asia to 3.5 as a start. They are no better than CONCACAF in any way. Who would have missed out this year? Iran or Australia? No big loss.

Africa goes down a spot as well. Instead of 10 group winners playing to 5 they can have 8 group winners play to 4.

Oceania would be absorbed into Asia or expanded. It sucks to bad to stay the way it is. If they could get Australia along with other island nations I wouldn't mind seeing Oceania get 1 full spot. I could get behind Australia, Japan, and New Zealand playing for 1 spot. All 3 made it in 2010. This way a Tahiti never happens again.

CONCACAF get 4. We have been consistently better than the other smaller confederations since the tournament expanded to 32.

Europe would stay at 13. Most WC are held in Europe so they would have 14 every other tournament so thats good enough for me.

South America 5.5. This would balanced it back out. Instead of 2 wildcards there would only be 1. Every zone would have representation as long as Oceania is expanded to include some real competition.

The playoffs are drawn from pots the same as the groups.

Im surprised they don't seed the wildcard playoff like they do in Europe. The top ranked team to play the lowest ranked team while 2nd and 3rd play each other.

It worked out well enough this year but it could have been Uruguay vs Mexico. Somebody in the current round of 16 would not have made the tournament. Replaced instead by New Zealand or Jordan.

I don't think you can cut any from Europe. There are a ton if teams there and some really good teams already don't make it.

Is just make Asia and Oceania one Confed and give Oceania's spot to CONCACAF and take Africa's .5 and give to South America.

Or expand the tourney to 40 and everyone plays one more group game.

if Oceania gets an automatic spot 10% of the time it's NOT gonna be New Zealand

think about that

Europe should be giving 1 team to Africa...

I know there was talk about maybe the World Cup going to 40 teams and bringing in more Asian and African teams. IMO it's perfect with 32 teams. Also, this shouldn't even be considered until the Asian and African teams start doing better. As for the OFC it should just merge with Asia already.

I wouldn't mind 8 groups of 5. It wouldn't be hard to adjust. The only knock is it begins to water it down. Some teams that didn't qualify would be good additions. Sweden, Ukraine, Panama, Egypt, and the top South American team that didnt qualify are a few that might help fill out 40 teams.

Africa should have 4 instead of 5.

Asia should have 4 instead of 4.5.

Oceania should have 0 instead of .5 and become part of Asia.

That's 2 spots to divide amongst the rest of the federations however you feel.

Africa has 54 countries. They deserve the 5 spots. Take one from Asia. By the way coming second in this group aside the US has been knocked out of the past 2 world cups by a team from Africa and the rest of the CONCACAF teams have generally sucked. The Big 3 (at least in perception and players in Europe) are UEFA, CONMEBOL and CAF. People want to watch Ronaldo, Messi and Yaya Toure not a no name guy from Barbados play.

Because Samuel Eto'o has really led Cameroon to World Cup glory. Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba haven't even won a African Cup of Nations with Cote D'Ivoire.

No African team has made the World Cup semifinals. Two nations from CONCACAF and one from Asia have reached that mark.

Because Barbados was so close to qualifying for the World Cup.

Look I can make the same faulty argument for all but probably 46 or so African teams. Nobody wants to see some no-name from Lesotho in the World Cup.

I get we were beaten by Ghana. It was 1 team that beat us twice. We don't have a bad record vs CAF.

1-2 vs Ghana but we also beat Algeria in 2010. In 2009 we destroyed the CAF champion 3-0 at the Confederations Cup. We defeated a fellow round of 16 member Nigeria before the start of this World Cup. We dont get a chance to play them often but our record vs the CAF is actually good.

Europe> South America> CONCACAF> Asia> CAF> Oceania.

I will say this, if Australia is gonna be a mainstay at the WC qualifying out of Asia, they deserve fewer spots.

You're making this statement after the performance they gave this cup?

They played better than at least 4 teams who advanced into the knockout stage for fricks sake. All this while fielding essentially a U-25 team plus Tim Cahill.

The fact that Greece, Algeria, Uruguay, and Nigeria made the next round is a quite funny. Although Nigeria did advance 100% because of the awesome officiating.
