My Seria A teams have been Napoli and Roma but with a new season emerging(hopefully) it looks like i need to stick to one. Ill probably just watch the season play itself out, but is there any thing yall have got that could possibly sway me in the direction of Roma?
If you were deciding between Roma and Inter, Lazio or Juve then a lot should be able to sway you to Roma but I really respect Napoli and they have a great squadra and entertaining as hell insane owner.

Roma is better for getting stekelenberg.
Inerested in seeing how bojan and pjanic do.

La Campionata kicks off for AS Roma this Sunday against Cagliari.
The match is on FSC at 8:30 am CST. (FOX Deportes has it on replay at 1pm (not sure how many posters here get that channel?)
Preview:
Pjanic and Kjaer just arrived, after international duties, this Thursday but I still think both of them may play. Kjaer is the best bet to start since Juan is just returning from an injury and is out. Though there is a chance Cassetti moves to CB and Rosi starts in his place at RB since both have been practicing all summer. I think Pjanic may come off the bench with Perrotta getting the start.
It seems that Luis Enrique has been practicing a 4-3-1-2 with Totti in center of the trident. Encouraging news in that it hopefully reveals LE's willingness to tweak his preferred positioning a bit to place Totti where he excels.
What may actually look like a Luciano Spalletti formation will probably serve stingier glasses of Calcio Champagne though since Spalletti demanded the ball played forward into open space as quickly as possible whereas LE will certainly stress controlling possession.
This difference in mindset has probably been a big issue in friendlies as most of the players are not used to the more methodical, possession recycling and often seem to hesitant. It will be interesting to see to what degree Totti complies with LE's vision by reigning in the lower percentage highlight one touches and back heels.
Cagliari will hopefully be a good matchup to work out some kinks before facing Inter next week. Unfortunately, the exodus of Aquafresca, Matri ect ect ect have left what has been a very solid mid table club for a while in a pretty weakened state that hopefully won't have them batting to avoid relegation. However, the Sardinians also play hard and always seem to give Roma more trouble than they should.
Here's the probable line-up:
--------------------Stekelenberg---------
Cassetti ----- Burdisso ----- Kjaer ------ Angel
De Rossi -------------- Gago ----------- Perrotta (Pjanic)
---------------------------Totti--------------------------
Bojan -------------------------------------Osvaldo

All aboard. Oh, and frick Lazio. I think my next kit will be a Totti. Is he staying for atleast two seasons?

They may have to bury him on the 18 yard mark.

Perhaps even a bigger concern is that Serie A is a whole lot different than La Liga in the amount of mid to lower table sides which are very disciplined, sound strategically and will drop back and absorb pressure all night but kill on well chosen counter attacks. . . I fear we may see Roma dropping points to a lot of lesser sides Inter-Barca 2010 CL style.
Cagliari 2 - Roma 1
Pretty much the scenario above as Cagliari bunkered like motherfrickers and it was, predictably, effective.
It's a long season and no reason to be overly pessimistic with so many new players but all the critics who said the Barca possession model isn't going to fly to well in Serie A have at least the first match's evidence in support of their argument.
It was telling that right after the Roma match I flipped to the replay of the Real Madrid match: whereas Roma hardly ever saw a instant without at least 8 Cagliari defenders in the area, Real scored a minute into my watching where there were 4 defenders total against 4 Real attackers and that's an attack featuring Ozil, CR, Benzema. Different leagues to say the least.

Well, Cagliari was set up quite brilliantly at the back. They man marked Bojan and dared Rosi to overlap, which he did little, and when he did, no one showed up at the goalmouth.
There were many similar elements to the Barca 4-3-3. Angel was bright until the goal and red card. De Rossi is probably not the right guy to play the Busquets role. He's too effective breaking forward to be pinned back. Pjanic looked good but needs a creator to link up with, and Totti looked a step off in the hole. Pjanic also looks hesitant to break free.
Overall, the off ball movement was poor, Osvaldo looked lost facing goal, and Bojan was marked out. He'll have to learn how to use tight defenses against themselves, and Totti needs to either shoulder the burden or be on his way.

Thanks for the breakdown with those interesting points.
You're right about the great defense and also that Roma is going to have to find a way to break them down. Cagliari defense is going to be more the rule that the exception in most matches.
Was easily going to be the MOTM until the defensive lapse and red card out of frustration a minute later. He's going to be an excellent player in the future but he's had a similar defensive disaster in every friendly as well.
However, the disastrous red card in the opening match against a club we should handle seems to be a Roma rite of passage. He's already fitting right in.
Great point. Aside from RB, one thing we really tried to address was a defensive mid to free up De Rossi. The Gago deal came through when we didn't get Fernando from Porto.
De Rossi needs to be freed up but Perrotta seems the most reluctant I've ever seen him to make runs forward in this new look. I think the first choice will be De Rossi - Gago - Pjanic.
Osvaldo and Bojan are still big question marks for me. Just because they scored effectively in La Liga doesn't mean that it'll transfer to Serie A. The 18 yo Roma youth product Caprari outplayed both of them in friendlies.
I though Totti looked a bit out of step at times but as usual almost every time we actually opened up the defense it was from a Totti pass. What was missing from recent seasons when we ran a more direct attacking 4-3-3 (in which our problem's never been scoring but defending) was De Rossi, Perrotta, Menez and Vucinic opening up passing lanes for Totti with their movement.

Stoke seems to be auditioning for a mid-table Serie A position.

Gago is more like Busquets. Quick to the ball, sees a pass ahead, and lots of one touch. De Rossi and Pjanic ahead of him looks very good.

Neither fits well with Totti. He needs runners, but Osvaldo only looks good back to goal and Bojan looked unfit and stale. I'd rather Borini and Borriello.

INTERNAZIONALE MILANO v AS ROMA
Saturday
FSC 1:45 CST
Both AS Roma and Inter look to rebound from lackluster starts under new managers.
Still a mystery as to what changes we'll see in Roma's lineup.
Angel is suspended for the red card against Cagliari. I expect a somewhat frightening move by LE to start attacking winger Taddei at LB instead of the backup LB Heinz who isn't as much of a threat going forward.
Juan is still not recovered, Not sure who starts in his place at CB between Kjaer, Heinz and Cassetti. Maybe Heinze since San Siro may not be the best first match for recently arrived Kjaer.
Borini and Borriello both looked better than Bojan and Osvaldo against Cagliari, I expect at least of them to start.
Expect Gago at defensive mid with De Rossi giving more support to the attack.
Cassetti and Rosi still seem to be battling for RB duties until Cicinho, who seems to LE prefer, recovers from injury.
Potential Line-Up:
Stekelenberg
Cassetti -- Burdisso - Heinz ---- Taddei
Gago
De Rossi -- Pjanic
Totti
Osvaldo -- Borini

I think Osvaldo is a bad fit with Totti. Osvaldo strikes me as a central target who likes to take up the same spaces as Totti. I haven't seen him enough but that's the first impression. Looking forward to Kjaer debuting, and I like that midfield a lot. Still not much width.
Posted on 9/19/11 at 11:58 am to Stewie Griffin
0-0 isn't a terrible result at Inter. Once again, Roma had more of the ball, but Inter created more realistic chances.
Great show from Borini, I think he's probably flat out better than Bojan. Pjanic had no drive, and I still hate how deep De Rossi sits, especially with no push from the fullbacks. Angel needs to get back, as does Cicinho. If they can provide the width Roma need, then I'm fine with these tactics. Also, Pizzaro was very good and probably should have stayed, if he wasn't tired, instead of Pjanic.
Totti has his moments, but he's having too many poor touches. The offense ultimately runs through him, and he hasn't had it yet.

For all the money we spent on Osvaldo and the fanfare regarding Bojan, I agree that Borini looks more promising than either. I'm still hoping that Bojan/Osvaldo come around and are more adjusting to Serie A defense being a bit different than what they're used to. At least Osvaldo works hard in the press.

This team desperately needs him to be as good as promised but he's not there yet. Wonder if he's a bit awed by Totti and deferring far too much. This has been apparent with some younger players coming in recently.
quote:

Yes!!! Fullback is by far our thinnest position and presumably where time/money ran short in the market. I know that Sabatini tried to sign Gregory van der Wiel et al but I think the idea ended up being that Cicinho and Cassetti could hold down RB until the next window where more money could be freed up for a future starting RB and cover for Angel at LB. We did buy LB Loic Nego but he's playing with the primavera squad and probably more of a long term prospect.
Seems though that LE doesn't think Cassetti fits since he had Perrotta at RB, who actually did a pretty fair job defensively considering he's only played there a few practices.
It was actually pretty crazy to see that line-up with attacking midfielders playing the 2 fullback spots.
quote:

Pizarro, unfortunately, is nursing injuries as usual and I believe he was only going to go an hour regardless. It's too bad that nagging leg injuries have taken such a toll on him as at 100% this system is as perfect a fit for him as Spalletti's Champaign football was.
quote:
Totti has his moments, but he's having too many poor touches. The offense ultimately runs through him, and he hasn't had it yet.
Agreed. He had a pretty poor game by his standards. I also think he's being asked to take the ball WAY to deep. He's much better in a false punta role and no longer as well suited to being a trequartista.
I suppose he's there because LE likes his ability to hold up the ball? but if he remains so deep it seems he'll need Pjanic or another MF getting into space quickly around him, right?
Also, Totti will probably play only around 70% of the minutes at best... wonder who LE sees playing in center of the attack in his place? Bojan? Osvaldo? Lamela?
