I never played soccer growing up, but my son has played soccer, so I have had made is a point to learn more about the game. The fact that the sport is so beloved internationally really adds to its appeal.

Plus, the fact that these guys have to be so fit in order to play at such a high level gives it more respect.

I started trying to learn the game last year when my kids started playing. I'm from a small town and had no opportunity to play soccer growing up, but I'm becoming a big fan as I learn more about it.

You know my sister goes to a 4A high school and I asked her why they don't have soccer teams. She told me that people have tried to get the administrators to add one, but with no luck. It makes you wonder how many potential Clint Dempsey's could be out there.

I've played off and on for 15 years (on for the last 6). I went to my first MLS game in 1998, I've been to MLS Cup and I've been to 5 US games.

I've the entire 2006 and 2010 World Cups on DVD, as well as every US match since 2004(ish.)

I have about 25 jerseys hanging in the closet, and autographs from some of the biggest names in US soccer history.

So, yeah. I'm a fan.

I played basketball growing up and not soccer but I'd much rather watch a soccer match than a basketball game ... unless LSU is playing.

So I guess in 1980 when I watched the US beat the USSR in hockey, since I wasn't a hockey fan at the time, I shouldn't have been watching it. It's called pride in your country. Who cares if people are soccer fans or not? Let everyone be patriotic.

But it will be the number four sport in the US, sooner rather than later.

Just out of curiosity, what is currently #4? Golf? Nascar? Hockey?

I honestly don't see sports like baseball, hockey and soccer not being elite as long as it is not a primary sport in the urban communities.

I'm definitely a bandwaggoner. Although I played soccer when I was younger, I never watch soccer.

I'll root for the U.S. during the WC, but after we're out, I'm sure I'll go back to not paying any attention to soccer. It is nice to have something to watch with LSU not in the CWS and a couple months of nothing going on til football starts.
